Additional info at http://www.technolog.ie

Sound is output to aux input of mini stereo (until I replace that with powered speakers). This is just the beginning for this great device! More pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mykitche...

The iPad is easily removeable (without unscrewing) - the wooden slat holding it in place is just tight enough to hold it snug. No power supply fitted yet (because battery power very good) but that is coming soon - just need to get the dremel out again.

Some people have commented about the hole left in the cabinet when I remove the iPad, I have an 8x10 photo (NOT of an iPad!) glued to a piece of wood that slots into the holder on the back of the cabinet door.

I bought a replacement door (which happened to be on sale) before cutting the original, in case it all went pear shaped (no pun intended!), so at any time I can abandon the idea and restore the kitchen back to the way it was.

Future developments:
- Install power source for iPad.
- Use Apple remote App on the iPad to stream all my music from iMac to stereo via Airport express (when Apple get around to updating their Remote App to work in landscape mode!)
- Radio streaming App.
- EyeTv for live TV.
Coverflow for browsing music would be nice - a curious omission from Apple.
Bluetooth headset for Skype calls - anybody know a headset that will pair with the iPad, my Motorola won't.
- Self powered speakers to bypass stereo altogether; a commenter suggested ceiling speakers - nice!
Don't like the cabinets.. darker, modern finish would be better.

See that's very cool. Frankly, I find these sorts of implementations of it - like the in car entertainment setup - much more interesting than just using it as a portable tablet.

It's cool ... but you don't really need an iPad to do it. Surely?

Exactly the same argument as the iPad in the car, why? The best possible thing you can use it for is music, and just as with the one in the car there are much more elegant solutions to that problem. Anything else could be done better by something not mounted on the wall.

It's like people haven't gotten over the fact that we can make pretty screens that change colors, and can mount them in lots of places. Just because we can doesn't mean we should.

Cool idea. Should have gone with some touchscreen + atom m-itx board. Cheaper and it can do so much more

I got bored after the first minute, so I skipped through it to see if there was anything interesting.

The Jamie Oliver videos idea seems to be the only logical reason to put this in the kitchen.

I'm inclined to agree, I don't think I've come across a touch screen that's that thin and looks that good though.

thickness doesn't matter when it's mounted inside a cabinet. You could also use an old lenovo X41T

Some years ago I was watching a home improvement show and they had the entire wired "smart home" thing going on. They had a panel that raised from the counter and I remember thinking no way would anyone go through the trouble of a auto-raising panel. Something like a flat panel to control everything in your home built flush in is more reasonable imo.. although, like I said I don't like the specific cabinets he had. Imagine an app that allows you to push a button that sends your grocery list to the store and they have everything you need ready for pickup. Now your cookin with fyre.

True, that said, I'm no Apple fan but, even I find the screen on those things to be impressive, mast laptop screens look a bit janky in comparison. Still not worth the massive cash difference but, it is a selling point.

If I spent 25 grand on a kitchen, I couldn't give a fuck about another 500 quid for a shiny computer. Hell, the interface is a lot nicer than Windows would be.

EDIT: And there's no fucking way I'd put some hoopty-ass Lenovo piece of shit in there. Ugly isn't even the half of it

Yeh but the lack of Flash support amongst other things makes it a bit shit tbh.  An Atom PC IS better, it's just a case of finding a decent screen.

But you'd use it to listen to music, put on a movie or look up a recipe. I'm bored of the Flash argument, whilst I think for a web interface device it's a mistake to leave it out, in this application it doesn't matter.

how much money do you think you even save by doing that? I bet there wouldn't be much in it and you have the headache of all the extra wires and space being taken up, this is pretty simple and it looks good.

I'm talking about the ease of walking over to the gadget and tapping what you need without ever leaving the kitchen... as a matter of fact.. mount that mother in the fridge. lol
