Don't be sad if you weren't the right age to enjoy the zenith of the pokemon craze circa 1999.

Back on topic, I'd second The Witcher EE
Making the game Balanced was an afterthought for the early Pokemon games. Psychic was the God-type that had no weaknesses and all the Psychic pokemon took prefect advantage of their STAB due to they all having excessive special attack.
Also no Special split made some Pokemon useless while others way OP. Gengar was one of the best special tanks and Charizard had pathetic stats, being unable to tank or sweep.
And most importantly was the lack of Physical/Special split. Gyarados got STAB with water moves and he had shit special [attack], while he had excellent physical attack, he couldn't make use of it because all his moves were special so he sucked.
New Pokemon games have perfected the gameplay. Now before you say "yeah well new Pokemon are shit" look at some of the Gen I, Weezing, Dodrio, Magneton and Dugtrio were literally just their pre-evolution with some other ones stuck onto them. And some many others had shit designs as well. WTF is Lickitung supposed to be? Jynx is pretty shit design. Mr.Mime is just dumb. Gen1 had just as many stupid Pokemon as any of the other generations.
I did play Gen1 as a kid, and I fucking loved it then. But I was a kid and now having played the newer, better games I see how bad the earlier games were. I would say it was just because they were from 1998, but all the problems I listed came from lazy design, not technological limitations.
