I think it would be interesting to know how much of an effect (if any) D&ST's debates and flame wars have had on people over the years.

Probably haven't shifted that much.

Definite and rather large swing from left/far-left to centre, part left, part right, part off-spectrum. A few of my views on issues have done the complete flip l->r, a few more have moved off the spectrum entirely.

It'll take me a while longer to quantify why.

Not really, maybe I've gone from being black/white on issues to being more independent and looking at issues differently

I think i have a better undertanding of (american) conservatism, and have had some pretty elucidatory/entertaining insights into their mentality.

personally i'm always a libertarian on the up/down scale. i sway from left to right depending on the issue - so i guess i could fit into centrist.

'Right' and 'Left' mean very little. Are you talking about economic or social policy? They aren't the same by any means. It's better to use the political compass concept with cardinal directions, North, East, South, West with variants in between.

Went from moderate left to center to moderate left.

Influences: good stuff on here, newspapers, magazines (real ones like The Economist, not some shitty tabloid where morons give their two cents on politics), internets etc

I think my Authoritarian/Libertarian point on the typical political compass became better defined.

I learned that left and right is too simple a view on most issues.

i believe, in american usage at least, that it refers to the reintroduction of REAL liberalism (economically, for the most part) to an american partisan-politics system that had misappropriated the term and transformed it into an ugly misnomer. 'liberal' has been a dirty term - a pejorative - for a long time in america, despite not actually referring to any values remotely linked to classical liberalism. hence, the resurgence is a 'neo'-phenomenon.

Yeah, they use the word liberal as an insult, well the conservatives do. It's catching on here too. Which is abit of a laugh, people over here think they can identify with that american style of politics and conservatism, lol.

It's something that's continued since the McCarthy era of Reds under the Beds imo, however that nasty term, "Socialism" is getting more usage these days too. It's quite funny.

Then again, I'm getting sick of out Liberal politians in Australia calling themselves "Economic Conservatives" to appease the moderate voters who simply latch on to the term Conservative and think it's who they should support.
