Gasoline Prices Spike; May Hit $4 Gallon...

CBS Chicago wrote:

But as CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports, the higher prices might actually be a good thing.

The growing pain at the pump kind of snuck up on many Chicago drivers, but now they're really feeling the bite.

"I just paid $3.54 for gas," said Michelle as she filled up at a Chicago gas station. "It's just outrageous."
HITS RECORD $9 GALLON IN UK...

Oil could give kiss of death to recovery; Triple-digit crude once again in offing...

I wouldn't be surprised Obama levees a "Windfall Profits Tax" further increasing prices.  Or perhaps he'll learn from Carter and we'll see long gas lines again (I'm sure Iran would ablge again).  Maybe Obama wants to nationalize the oil industry s well?

I don't see a spike in there... Looks pretty stable to me. This is over three years btw.

Maybe this will mean people actually look into alternative energy?

No, that makes too much sense....

I recently read in my local newspapers that rising prices for gas actually have nothing to do with the actual amount that's being produced every day. At the stockmarkets every day more oil is traded than is existent.
In Germany (1 liter ~1,45 Euros) the owners of Hedge funds earn 7 cents for every liter sold at a gas station. As far as I know that's more than the owner of the gas station gets.

Well, Hydrogen fuel would probably seem prohibitively expensive at first, so I'll go with E85 and/or hybrid vehicles.

My point is that every time one of these deals comes around, people freak out, saying how our dependence on foreign oil is the death of us, blah blah, then all of a sudden prices drop, and nobody gives a shit anymore.

If you buy a hybrid, you have to plug it in to charge the battery, no? Where does the electricity come from?

and fyi, i'm not saying we could stop using oil at all, petroleum is used in the production of almost EVERYTHING, it's just that people either need to a) look at reducing their precious dependence, or b) shut the fuck up

Gas is expensive because they place high taxes on it to discourage people from driving. They want you to use mass transit instead, so they manipulate the prices to make them artificially high. It's all about controlling your choices.

lol ya i just asked my dad why 2 secs ago and he said the same thing.

i guess that makes sense though, either mass transit or greener/more fuel efficient cars.

No, it doesn't make sense. It's a limit on your freedom and an entirely coercive act on the part of the government.

Well, I dunno where you live so...

I'm all for nuclear energy but people who casually push environmental stances generally aren't. That's why I brought it up. They'll rave about hybrids or electric cars but cry NIMBY at the slightest whiff of a nuclear plant being built within 100 miles of them.

its gonna need to happen sooner or later isnt it? oil isnt a renewable resource and its not in abundance everwhere, better to get people to change now?

also do you think the US is doing the same thing? but on a lesser scale obviously...

Palisades (the one I linked) is just down the road from me now (probably an hour south...less maybe).
I'm all for the wind and solar farms, too. Whenever I get around to buying a home (instead of renting) I'll look at the solar panels... also tying them into the grid, so i can have my own solar farm...
