I'm sure that people are going to jump to this conclusion: "See, that's all you need to do. Guns are useless."

However: When Carlos told the suspects he had called 911, they got into a car and fled just ahead of sheriff’s deputies, who arrived within three minutes of when Patino first got Carlos’ call.

They were very lucky. The police were on their way, but the armed robbers were already there with weapons pointed at this kid's parents. If these criminals were the right type for spiteful or entertainment murder, this whole scenario could have gone south.

“If not for the brave and educated actions of the 7-year-old boy, this might have ended tragically,” said sheriff's Capt. Patrick Maxwell.

Yes, but it still could have ended tragically. They were at the mercy of the assholes who broke in. Glad they got out of this pickle, but I hope this family arms up. I guess having to confront criminals isn't all as "very, very unlikely" as some make it out to be.

I believe the supreme court has ruled that the police do not actually have a duty to protect you. In other words, if you call 911, don't expect the cavalry to come flying in.

Why anyone just blindly assumes that they'll keep everything safe and happy is beyond me.

Are more guns the answer? Are more police the answer?

Surely, these are just "band aids".

Why is there so much crime? The government needs to answer that.

Yeah, the next time they're being held up in their home by crazed gunmen, they can feel safe knowing that somewhere in the house there's a sentient firearm with the ability to defuse the situation.

I guess winning $33.65 million isn't all as "very, very unlikely" as some make it out to be. I mean, this link doesn't mention or even allude to the frequency of large lottery winnings, but who needs that to determine likelihood? Right?

The bad guys are still on the loose.

The story is going away, but I suspect it was another case of mexican narco goons.

Good on them but I could have seen that ending very, very, very badly. Fortunate, though, that most criminals are cowards.
