My friend did Aeronautical Engineering and Aerospace at UNSW
First semester was 32 hours and that was the shortest of the 4 year degree.

Yeah, to clarify my hours this semester.. it's 12 in classes and tutorials, but they want an additional 28 per week spent working on stuff at home (ie. four subjects at 10 hours a week to give a 40 hour week.. but in reality, fuck that... )

In class? errr about 25-30 hours. straight science.

That's a straight science load up - a bit heavier than usual outside perhaps since i'm doing a second year maths course (i just started first year) on top of the normal maths, physics, chem, all that jazz.

but my degree (Bachelor of Philosophy (science) @ Australian National University) is a bit screwy when it comes to contact hours as on top of my courses (well, actually instead of one of my courses) i do a self-directed research topic thingy where i pick a topic that looks interesting and research the fuck out of it.

@minty: yeah they recommend 40/week for us too. once i start my asc's (the research project thingy) and with the 2nd year maths, i think i would be reasonably happy if i kept it to 40.

Why do you guys get 40h/week? Over here professors assume that you're only taking THEIR class. I spend 40h/week on homework alone. I'd be elated if I could spent 40h combined between class and HW. Shit, I could get a job or have a social life or something.

Erm, idk not many. Not as much as I should.

Currently, I have three bits of work to do a week, and have to write up one experiment. Probably spend about two hours on each. And I have a dissertation due by the end of the semester, so average all that out .... 8 or 9 hours a week.

true, you are expecting to spend a lot of time self teaching and doing coursework/dissertations as well though.

I think my average was 24 hours a week, 2 hours for every 10 credits.

I could believe that learning how to be a pilot requires an immense amount of hours. but alot people are saying they are in class 32 hours a week AND have to do homework AND try to have a social life AND work if they need more money. If youre doing 32 hours of class time you are putting a hell of a lot more time than the average 40 hour work week.

Also, if somone is sitting in a classroom for so many hours at a time, and assuming they spend even more time sitting down doing homeowkr why would anyone want to waste away their free time sitting down again at a computer?

People in these crazy schedules dont have a social life (I didnt last year, it sucked) and very students (at least where I was) worked during the year.
