US Government Poisoned Alcohol During Prohibition (1920s-1930s)

https://img198.imageshack.us/img198/5161/largeprohibitionendpart.jpg

Slashdot wrote:

"Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist Deborah Blum has an article in Slate about the US government's mostly forgotten policy in the 1920s and 1930s of poisoning industrial alcohols manufactured in the US to scare people into giving up illicit drinking during Prohibition.

Known as the 'chemist's war of Prohibition,' the federal poisoning program, by some estimates, killed at least 10,000 people between 1926 and 1933.

The story begins with ratification of the 18th Amendment in 1919, which banned sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the US.

By the mid-1920s, when the government saw that its 'noble experiment' was in danger of failing, it decided that the problem was that readily available methyl (industrial) alcohol — itself a poison — didn't taste nasty enough.

The government put its chemists to work designing ever more unpalatable toxins — adding such chemicals as kerosene, brucine (a plant alkaloid closely related to strychnine), gasoline, benzene, cadmium, iodine, zinc, mercury salts, nicotine, ether, formaldehyde, chloroform, camphor, carbolic acid, quinine, and acetone.

In 1926, in New York City, 1,200 were sickened by poisonous alcohol; 400 died. The following year, deaths climbed to 700.

These numbers were repeated in cities around the country as public-health officials nationwide joined in the angry clamor to stop the poisoning program. But an official sense of higher purpose kept it in place, while lawmakers opposed to the plan were accused of being in cahoots with criminals and bootleggers.

The chief medical examiner of New York City during the 1920s, one of the poisoning program's most outspoken opponents, liked to call it 'our national experiment in extermination.'"
Wow.  I hope we don't hear about something like this happening with again ever.  I see ALOT of lawsuits from this.

Let's see if I understand this correctly.

The gubmint put "poison" into something that will already kill you if you drink it. People drink it. They die. And the gubmint gets accused of poisoning people. For those people choosing to drink poison.

Right. Makes perfect sense.

Seems like what they were trying to do was to make methyl alcohol LESS palatable so that people would be LESS apt to drink it during Prohibition--ie, trying to DECREASE poisoning due to methyl alcohol intake. Similar to what is done with antifreeze and natural gas today.

Drinking methanol makes you go blind, so it's not like adding other chemicals to it make it substantially worse.

Stuff like this has happened again since.

Someday in texts books i hope my great grandkids are reading articles like "In 2001 a corrupt shadow government that had control of our country for decades, staged a terror attack by flying a plane into two heavily populated buildings in order to pass legislation that limited freedoms and to deploy troops perminantly in the middle east"

Homemade booze killed a shitload.

Mitch, go wear a tin foil hat. The government doesn't have as much power as you think.

One thing good about the internets is that misdeeds, lies and murders are archived for all to see. The Warren Commision is a good example of those assholes repeating a lie enough times that a majority sign on to absolute nonsense. Kind of like Waco, 9-11 and our dubious reasons for invading Iraq. All revealed as lies and fraud.

I doubt history will ever sy the U.S. did anything but export economic misery, when the last decade is viewed. We create boogymen like OBL. We kill presidents who actually try and enact change, like JFK.

Like I said before, America did not lose our moral compass, we pawned it for crack money.

Obama is a fallguy. A spokeshole, like most presidents.

Do we pretend that bush had no real power but obama does?

That is the EXACT reason its in the interest of the elite to put limitations against the internet, censorship against "hatefull speech", and LEGISLATION GIVING THEM POWER TO TURN OFF THE INTERNET IN AN EMERGENCY. (see other thread floating around here)

It's kinda hard to censor the internet in a democratic country. It's political suicide in the first place. Enjoy being voted out once you implement it.
