So Argentina are making abit of a deal about the Falklands again. Especially because an oil rig has been sent because it's possible there's oil over there so, surprise surprise, suddenly shit gets started.

Doesn't make sense really, the islanders consider themselves to be British, a war was fought and won (with no real help from USA/NATO). Yet stupid shit is still being said. If it was a case of proper colonialism with the islanders wanting to be part of Argentina and shit, I'd think different about it all. But the people and the history, none of it seems to point to "It should belong to Argentina"

Now suddenly you have latin american leaders backing Argentina. And no surprise 'ugo is also getting involved lol.

Latin American and Caribbean leaders have backed Argentina's claim over the Falklands, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has said.

At a regional summit in Cancun, Mexico, a document has reportedly been drafted giving Argentina unanimous support.

It comes a day after a British oil rig began drilling for oil off the islands, a move Argentina formally objected to.

It'll be interesting to see where this all leads. But for now I'll put it in the category of "politicians talking shit cos of elections" (both sides) or just the generic "international shit talk" category (just like the european reaction to israel killing that dude)

It has never been Argentinian, but geographically they have a pretty reasonable case.

It depends on if:

The British rig Ocean Guardian began drilling 100km (62 miles) north of the Falklands on Monday, despite fierce opposition from Argentina.
Is actually Falklands water or Argentinian water. From the way things are being made out, it's not Argentinian but it should be because the Falklands should be Argentinian... lol.

Something to do with EEZ I think.

The Royal Navy hasn't had much to do lately.

There isn't much Royal Navy left IIRC.

You don't need much to deal with the Falklands, IIRC.

If the Argentinians had put up a real fight they would have won it easily.
Now I doubt there are enough ships.

Then it should be fairly sporty, shouldn't it?

If people dying over a remote sheep farm is sporty then yes.

I'd be interested to know if the Argentinians really nationally believe its a big issue, or if politicians just whip it up every now and then to distract from more important things. Not that Mrs T didn't use it to her advantage....

Meh, claim their capitol for the UK as we once thought about maybe thinking about taking it back in days of empire.
Have all the British people passionately feel that we have the right to "warmo land" the name English people call Argentina's capitol.

Apply through the UN for UK to be granted rule of all of Argentina, even though nobody there would want to be ruled by the UK (tbh, current govenrnment, does anyone wanted to be ruled by the UK?)

Seems sensible that this is being seriously discussed anywhere...

We should be laughing in their faces, moving some shipping into the area and having a few little tactical "training" exercises of relevant units / personnel.

Politics /= blood pressure health. Move along to the next attempt to disctract your voters please Argies.

We claimed it already, they invaded, we whupped their asses and took it back. They're just pissy over the fact the oil that might exist there will go to us instead of them.

Well, Argentina keeps devaluing their currency and is close to Zimbabwe-esque superinflation coupled with price controls which have created massive shortages of everything from beef to milk... yeah, they have reason to deflect attention and stir up nationalism...

lol@UN. To be legally binding, it will go to the Security Council which... UK has veto power. I doubt it will go to the ICJ though... Possible, but very unlikely.

Apparantly they're always sending troops in little boats over there every week. I met someone in the RAF who went there and he said they just find boats drift towards the island full of Argentine equipment. Might not be true though lol...

Well, it's only recently they've been talking about oil so that's probably the reason now.

As for before oil, I have no idea. Argentina had a dictatorship at that time of the war in the 80's, they wanted public opinion to improve, so they invaded the falklands to claim it. Now, it's not exactly normal for any country to just sit there and let that happen, especially if the population would rather not be under Argentinian rule and consider themselves British.

Essentially it's the same as if Argentina would have invaded the UK main islands itself. It's not that the UK is all "omg keep teh falklands its our most precious land" there was/is no real value, it was more of the principle than the value. You can't go around invading and claiming territory like that and not expect to get punched in the face, at the very least.

The government has a duty to defend its citizens, all the UK was/is doing was defending itself.

The UK would loose at lot of face if it gave the islands to the argies....there would be a right royal shit fight after losing soldiers in the 80's.
What would happen to the residents??? they are british citizens would they have to be resettled back to the UK??
