With all the money that Las Vegas has made over the years, you would think they'd diversify their economy more.

Instead, the idiots decided to let tourism remain as their primary economic sector, which is probably the most vulnerable industry to the business cycle.

During economic booms, tourism skyrockets.  During recessions, it collapses.
Honestly, what would they diversify to?  The whole conception of Vegas was based upon gambling.  It a city in the middle of the desert.
Yeah, they got all pissy about the nuclear waste the government wanted to store in Yucca Mountain. That would've been a boon to local jobs
heh...

I do see what Turq is trying to say.  Florida is wiping their shoes of the huge pile of shit the state stepped in.  Being a property tax/tourism based state as primary income has really screwed the state over.  Revenue projections are still flat.  Analysts are optimistic as to a 2011-2013 recovery, but I don't think the big O is done fucking up the economy.  The entire populous of Titusville, Merritt Island  and Cape Canaveral are collectively holding it breath to see if the axe is still going to fall on NASA.

Tourism is always the first industry to fail, and the last industry to recover in any recession. The booms and busts are wilder for the tourist industry. It's not something I would ever want to depend on

Coupled with a few hard freezes as a direct result of Global Warming and there goes the Orange/Grapefruit/Strawberry Crop -and we're really in it.

In committe, it seems that the law makers are starting to see this as well and trying to set aside safeguards/stock pile reserves to get the State throught times like this.  I tell you what though for the last 7 years, whenever I heard a lawmaker say "we need to be more like California with respect to..."  shivers went up my spine -with good reason.  I don't hear that too often anymore.
