The Swiss population have spoken, apparently - 57.5% in favor. Switzerland is moving against Muslims, or at least against open preaching of everything but Christianity. Is this a move to stop any open expression of religion, or just against Muslims, and could this result in retaliation from Muslim extremists?

(according to Fox, it's supposed to be against fundamentalists...)

'tis what happens in a direct democracy. The entire government was against the ban, as far as I understand.

I personally think it's shocking, tbh. I mean fuck, look at the posters supporting the ban.. Wow..

Personally, I support it.  Part of what Switzerland's culture is their architecture and skyline, and building something that doesnt fit in makes it stand out like a sore thumb.  Why should they get to ignore Switzerland's culture for their religion?  If they want to build religious buildings, build them to fit with the outside architecture and do what you want with the insides.

What I heard was that the mainstream government was actually promoting for it, but the populace voted against it lol. You'd probably have this shit in loads of other countries in and out of Europe if the people were given the choice. Ah well, I was never a fan of Islamic architecture anyway

Kinda indifferent to this. If they voted for it then the people have spoken in a democracy...

I think the difference between having loads of these things in the ME is that the ME views religion as a major part of life, whereas in places like Switzerland its far more low-key and generally about the historical architecture. Having loads and loads of them wouldn't look right tbh.

according to the news:

And now populist parties in Denmark and the Netherlands say they want referendums, too.Geert Wilders, head of the Dutch Freedom Party, told the Dutch daily "Volkskrant" that his party "will call upon the government to make a similar referendum possible in the Netherlands."

And in Denmark, Danish People's Party head Pia Kjaersgaard welcomed the Swiss ban and said her party would also seek a similar vote.

But I thought you Euros were 'enlightened'. It's what you keep telling people in my country...

Banning mosques is enlightened?

400 years you say? I could've sworn most of the continent was ruled by despotic kings just 100 years ago.

Muslims has just got permission to build mosques here in Denmark. We are praying in old factories , small houses and storage buildings.
The biggest three political parties here in Denmark are against a ban, but lets see... You never know what Pia has in her bag

To be fair, that's how most Liberals are. It's what I've noticed over the years. With conservatives, you get what you expect, but with more Liberal minded folk it's more complicated like that.

I think good examples are like you said, some European countries/cultures, and also Brian from Family Guy and also KEN-JENNINGS. These are archetypical liberal douche's preaching all sorts of crap but there's still a bullshit hypocritical racist streak that will always come out from time to time.

It's kinda hard to explain, but it's like, you can be one of those typical Apple Mac, Starbucks drinking trendy typical kind of person that follows all the typical Liberal political agendas about the environment and war and shit like that, but you know these people still probably can be quite racist at the same time, I suppose in a sense it's sort of like NIMBY. There's quite a few people like that on this forum actually.

So you're talking about a few people that were independently wealthy due to land ownership that had the free time to think philosophically. Gotcha. I forgot that having a learned elite rather than a learned populace is the height of enlightenment.
