Okay, work's over, time to vent.
Well first off I don't think anything could have proven Conroy's point better than how the Daily Telegraph reported his announcement.
This article is unquestionably among the worst pieces of journalism I've ever seen. It is childish and pathetic and although I never expect much from the Daily Telegraph it represents a new low. Photoshopping Stephen Conroy to resemble Joseph Stalin, seriously? Is that was news journalism is now? They may as well have mocked him up as Joseph Goebbels, it would have probably been more accurate. But of course, comparing Conroy to a Nazi would have been crass and childish. It's okay to compare a politician to a perpetrator of genocide as long as you're not comparing them to a German one.
It was a badly written uninformative opinion piece poorly disguised as a news report. It mentioned next to nothing about the actual proposal yet featured numerous examples of hyperbole in the form of quotes from media bosses that bemoaned the yoke of communism and draconian laws being so unfairly rammed through against the wishes of the people. None of them actually addressed the proposal itself, not one offered any objective analysis of what it would mean. Journalism! What a quaint idea!
All the media bosses had their say, each more melodramatic than the last. Even Malcolm Turnbull threw his hat in, arguing that the proposal was a threat to freedom, liberty and democracy. I'm surprised he didn't add "and the American way" given how Americanised the debate has become. Constant comments from those caught up in the bullshit tide roaring about socialism and communism and how bad they are. Hey dickweeds, press censorship has nothing to do with any distinct political ideology.
The thing is I am sure there are concerns to be had with the legislation, there are things that need to be brought to light. There are legitimate criticisms to be levelled at it. But the media is utterly failing to do any of this in favour of their sensationalist self-interested agenda. Meanwhile the ABC isn't going to comment because it is in regard to commercial media and doesn't apply to them. See they have rules that they're not allowed to editorialise, they report the news as it is and the result is that
people who watch or listen to the ABC are more informed. But the real kick in the teeth for me that took away any remaining hope for journalistic integrity came when the reporter here made a special out of place mention of the fact that Conroy said "shit" when he realised he was late for Senate.
"Ooh! He swore! The bad man swore! Everybody! Did you hear him? He swore!"Fuck's sake, someone deserves a slap in the head for that. They actually called him a
potty mouth. How juvenile can you get?
