He wouldn't have got the job even if Turnbull backed him.
Then we might as well have put up Pauline Hanson if she wasn't going to get the job. It might have kept her out of causing trouble in the senate for a little while. Would that have been a responsible thing to do?
Its impossible to discuss these hypotheticals. - would Abbott have been better during the GFC than Rudd? Who can say.
Australia is/was a completely different country, very different financial structure and insulated for that period by the tail-end of the mining boom.
The GFC might as well have been on Mars, Rudd's unproductive borrow-spend program may or may not have been the reason we were relatively unscathed, I don't believe it personally.
