Simple question. Does alcohol bring out the true person? Or is it just the alcohol?

The reason I ask. There is the guy I work with who is in jail right now because he was at a house party and whatever happened (some fight with some guys or something) he pulled a butterfly knife and said he was going to get his gun and shoot his girlfriend. Never would I have thought he would do something like that. Not even close. But, he was drunk.

I would say yes. Usually when you're drunk you get the courage to do or say what you really feel.

It lowers inhibitions, and as a result actions are based more on what someone wants to do rather than what they know they should do.

The question is whether the "true" person is the one beaten into submission by social conformism or the raw, animalistic id.

Id is just the part of you that wants to fuck that girl, chock that guy, shoot that dog.

What FM means here is the true nature of a person animalstic like the id or is the true nature of him the one that acts rational and normal.

Generally yes. Dropped inhibitions can make you reveal anything that you might have bottled up (heh) plus lowers your ability to control your impulses. It's not necessarily the "real" you...it's just the part of you that is the counterbalance to your sober persona, also known as the id. The "real" you is the combination of the id and who you present outwardly to others on a day-to-day basis.
