President Barack Obama reaffirmed his campaign pledge to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech Saturday, but offered no timetable or specifics for acting on that promise.

He acknowledged to a cheering crowd that some policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.

"I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,'" Obama said to a standing ovation from the crowd of about 3,000 at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay civil rights advocacy group.

The law was passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton, who also promised to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the military but was blunted by opposition in the military and Congress. Obama said he's working with Pentagon and congressional leaders on ending the policy.

Call me ignorant or whatever bu t what exactly is the problem with nobody asking you your sexuality and you being asked not to announce it? It seems to me just a "We want this for no other reason but to just have it" type thing.

Anyway, I can see this becoming a "I'm not going to the military full of fags" or "I'm not going to send my children off to a military full of homos"

Why does it matter? The issue becomes if heteros reveal their sexual orientation its met with a laugh over who he screwed the night before. if a gay guy does it, he has to pack his bags.

Umm, talking about your sexual orientation in the military isn't gtg no matter what it might be. It's supposed to be a professional environment and talking about your weekend conquests is not gtg anyway. There were a few people in my unit that we suspected were gay but no one ever gave them shit for it. Sure, some jokes were made but they didn't get it any worse than anyone else. Hell, we had a few blatant lesbians too that never hid their orientation and they weren't ever prosecuted for it.

It was never a big deal at all. But pushing the issue will make it a very big deal indeed. No one wants the 'We're here, we're queer, get used to it' people around. Keep your political militancy out of the military.

He had to wait for gays to be added to the hate crimes bill first. Now they'll be able to prosecute soldiers for 'hate crimes' on gays in the military in federal court instead of military courts martial. They dovetail perfectly
