It seems real simple; we either learn to pick up and dispose of our garbage are we are doomed.

DOOMED!

Midway Island has beaches that are piled high with as much as 5-10 FEET of garbage;

I know a problem with recycling the plastic bottles (mountain dew, water and the like) the bottle itself is a different variety than the cap and the little freshness/antifuckwithme ring.

Have a look at some of the computer dumps in Africa.

They are worse.

Sad thing is, by the look of it 95% of that could be recycled.

I back ATG on this one. Its utterly fucked what we are leaving to our kids.

If we are half smart we would use the garbage to fuel Plasma arc disposal reactors. This would dispose of the garbage, generate power, create synthetic gas thus solving many problems at once. Of course we arent smart, and we will probably keep on the path we are on.

My cousin was a navy guy in the 70's. He said that everyday dozens of full bags of garbage were pushed into the sea.

How the hell do you think we "responsibly" take care of our garbage? We throw it in a big pile in a designated place, oooohhhh, aaaaaahhhhh.

Encouraging manufacturers to create packaging that produces less waste is probably a more realistic alternative than encouraging the general population to recycle more and to waste less. It's a simple numbers game. Just go up the chain to sort it out more effectively. Of course you can do both, but you can much more easily and effectively guide the manufacturers to change their ways than the public

Convince them that less packaging saves money Poland Spring went to a different shaped bottle because it allowed them to use less plastic. Not only saves them money but it's less harsh on the environment. Stuff like that should be encouraged.

(Of course, bottled water in general is a totally asinine idea that creates thousands of tons of waste plastic every year but that's a different topic)

i heard a guy say this once on the national geographic channel and it's probably the most intelligent thing anyone has said about the issue.  it's not an exact quote, but basically the show was about national parks and it being our last great heritage for wildlife and a place for people to get back to nature.

national parks are pristine places on the planet, and are becoming smaller and smaller.  and when we go to these places, we feel as though we are in a better place, away from our artificial lives and concrete jungles.  and when we leave, we are sad to leave this beautiful place.... but we fail to realize we've always lived here!

Seriously one of the biggest things you can do to cut down on this.. Is bring a cup with you, everywhere and ask fast food places not to wrap your burgers..

I also almost never take bags..
