But when we say "identical cards" what do we really mean? Going so far as to say it has to be exactly the same manufacturer? model? batch?
Same base model with same amount of VRAM as in HD 7970 3GB for example. Doesn't matter which brand, custom PCB etc.

That doesn't limit the possibilities of getting hands on one much. SLi is more picky at times, sometimes requires same BIOS version to be flashed on practically identical cards.

Have another question.  Is EyeFinity that much better for handling 3-5 monitor setups?  Or is it marketing, and SLI will just be as capable?

I'm probably gonna just go new cards by the end of the year, since my 580 only has 1.5GB VRAM.  So the real question will be, is EyeFinity better for multi-screen setups.  Just hate AMD driver issues though.  And I generally prefer NVIDIA.

GTX 680 with its 2GB is equal or better than HD 7970 even at Eyefinity resolutions. No real difference tbh. I would get 4GB models for that big res tho. There is no single GPU capable of handling 3 monitors well.

Btw, its crossfire.

e: Worth noting HD 7970 received nice price cut recently, CF is much cheaper than 680 SLi.

I was going to get an ultrasharp but changed my mind at the last minute and got this
http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consumer/c … d-9-3d-led

it arrived today, it's pretty great

i really wasn't expecting much from the 3D but i would say it's at least as good as the cinema 3D, if not a little better because the screen doesn't seem as dark as it does in the cinema

even the 2D - 3D conversion works pretty well

you have to put the little button cell batteries in the glasses, not sure how long they're gonna last

Actually set up my S23A700D an hour ago too and so far this is much better than my previous 2233RZ.

Eyefinity and Crossfire aren't one and the same though, is it not?  You could go single card, using the active Display ports, and go triple screen Eyefinity.  But for nVidia, you will need a second card to go triple screen.

But yeah, I'll be keeping an eye on a 680 4GB.

And second yeah, those new 7970 price points are defnitely tempting.

i have a single 6870 with 2gb running 3x samsungs, i'm happy with it.

edit; i migrated those 3 monitors from a 5850. it handled it pretty well, and the only reason i upgraded the gpu was to give 3 monitor support to my wife's machine

Eyefinity is just what AMD calls using 3 or more screens. CF is having multiple GPUs.

GTX 680 supports 3 monitors for gaming + additional monitor for 2D tasks same time.

Hmmm...  Must read up on the 680.

If you don't have Display port monitors, will you need Active Display Port adapters for all three gaming monitors?  Or are even Display ports required?

It has two DVI connectors that you can use + HDMI + DP. Shouldn't need DP adapters.

Not yet, but I think I'll try it with Diablo 3 this weekend.

Sweet.  Going 680 4GB now.  You have just made me going for one that much sooner.  Active Display port adapter prices made the 7970 route painful.

That one works for triple screen extended desktopo?   Game will play at 5760 x 1080/1200?  Don't you need the Active version?

my setup's in the middle of the page. it is the active version - with eyefinity on the 5850, i needed a displayport to vga, because that card had two dvi & diplay port out.

The price isn't that bad tbh http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-006B … B004071ZXA
But yeah why put the money on adapters when you can use them towards GTX 680 4GB.

e: changed the link to mini DP adapter.

the price has come down, they used to be > $100.

"why put the money on adapters"? because 15 months ago they didn't have 680's, but ATI had 5850's, and i've been running 3x 1920x1080 since =P

Yeah, they seem to have come down in price.  Last I checked, the ones I was interested in were in the $60 range.  But still, one less connection to come lose or fail, the better.

Cheap (ish) Kepler set for Release May 10th.

With several units already released 'on the quiet', early looks at the '670 have starting coming in and by all accounts this is a card set to shake things up. The Nvidia GTX 670 not only bests the HD 7950 as expected, but also appears to pull convincingly ahead of the HD 7970; this would leave AMD's fastest playing catch-up with Nvidia's second fastest  (single) GPU
