My PC has done this a few times. I just come back and it's on my password screen, randomly. Even seen it just go black and shut down.

I put it to an SSD related issue, as I can't figure out why else it would do it and it only happened after I got my SSD for my boot drive.

Most definitely not an SSD related issue as this happened before I bought my SSD.

Do the random shutdowns occur more commonly in OS X or W7? I've heard Hackintoshes can be a bit finicky at times...

Shutdowns occur on both systems just as much. I've worked with Hackintoshes for over 2 years now and know the ins and outs pretty well. I run a Vanilla kernel with like 3 extra Kexts and my own DSDT.aml file. It's as stable as the real thing (probably more so). One day I should write a guide, cause I've been through all the errors and shit and it's good to have a hackintosh.

CapnNismo - My temps stay below 37C at all times. I've got an Antec 900 with the fans all on at High and a Scythe Mugen CPU cooler. i7 is running at 32C and HDDs are at 19C. I don't have a monitor for the rest just now on OSX because it doesn't detect the sensors.

It just happened there, and I have absolutely no logs as to why. This is incredibly frustrating. Luckily all my work is constantly saved via Dropbox and backup servers, but I can't go on like this much longer.

Do you have another working PSU you can test with? I know several people that experienced the same issue and it turned out to be a dying power supply.

This PSU is brand new, literally. I don't have another PSU because I binned my other one.

Are com ports even used on computers today?

I've seen them still being used for connection to industrial grade graphic printers that still are chugging away since DOS days.

The reason I asked this is because, VIA just released a quad core ITX board with 12 comports.

Yeah, definitely something for industrial/commercial use.  All without the overhead headaches of say, USB ports.

Computer Engineer by degree here.  COM + assembly + microcode = awesome.

Talked to lecturer about why we are using COM ports instead of USB. Answer was USB port would require it's own course haha

Atm making audio synthesizer on FPGA with VHDL. Pretty cool stuff.

UARTs are a lot more simple than pesky USB. RS-232 is way underrated.

might try and pick one up, just for the sake. could be neat to learn some coding on the side too.

it could be pretty nifty to use as a htpc. though itll be quite a few months before any are actually available

Seems rather impossible to get one here. And it is not going to be very cheap when they are due to insane demand and limited availability
