this album is the weirdest collection of eclectic influences, noise, garbage and electro-clash shit you'll ever hear

... but it's really really fucking good.

the premise is basically fucked up samples, electro, noise, dub warbles and skipping drum-lines, doom atmospherics... with rapping, occasionally, too.

each song really shouldnt work or even be listenable... but it's fucking brilliant when you stick with it.

lil wayne drum-rolls on some dark, doomy apocalyptic shit with operatic melodrama. and it works. oddly fantastic.

Part of "witch house", right? I've seen that word around a few times recently(ish).

hahaha witch-house, yeah whatever labels they come up with to describe this shit

although salem have absolutely nothing remotely house-like about their music at all.

I didn't realise it was a word that the labels came up with ... and what's wrong with choosing a word to describe a certain style?

I also didn't think it was meant to imply house-like music. I thought it was more along the lines of saying, like, haunted house.

whatever

no they mean house as in 'house', the broad electronic label.

most of this stuff is just influenced by old 90's hip-hop beats and pop rhythms... nothing much to do with house

and ofc i dont think there's anything wrong with genre labels... i just think sometimes the originality of the labels are funny.

'gothstep', 'psychegaze' etc.

pitchfork are normally always 2-3 months behind on catching up and bandwagoning genres

high-music publications and critical establishments have been throwing the term around for a while

pitchfork are not taste-makers: they merely repackage something and 'cool'ify it for faggots like you

I'd seen all the hype about the album, and I listened to it when it "became available" the other day. I've only listened to it once briefly but my first and so far lasting impression is that I didn't like the vocals very much. They felt weak compared to music/beats/whatever.

Will revisit it tomorrow. Hopefully it'll grow on me.

Edit: Liked it more second time round. I still find the choppy vocals a bit odd, though.

i've recommended this here before but you really should not overlook it...

it's the closest that music has come to the 'classic' IDM sound in 2010... skam revival at its finest...
