  • Card for before DX11 cards(and the wait for lower costs)

What would be the best relatively cheap GFX card I could get if I want good performance and want to wait for DX11 before getting a really nice card???

GTX 260 or something else???

I can get a GTX 260 for ~$145 @ newegg, or a comparable HD4870 for the same...

I'm currently leaning to Nvidia, but am not set on anything either...

I just want to play BF2, Empire: Total War, and other stuff until BF3 and I don't really want to go more than ~$150-175 since DX11 is just around the corner...

Build's Likely specs:

CPU: Phenom 2 940/955 w/ Xigmatek Dark Knight or Scythe Mugen 2
Mobo: GA-MA790X-UD4P
RAM: OCZ Platinum AMD Special 8GB ddr2 1066/OCZ Gold DDR2 1066
PSU: Corsair 620W modular
Case: Cooler Master 590 w/ 5-6 fans
OS: Vista Home Premiumx64/7 Home Premium x64
Monitor: ASUS 22" 2ms Widescreen
HDD: Samsung f1 1TB
GFX: ???

Cost w/o GFX: ~$1310

Budget for now(excluding DX11 upgrade costs): ~$1450-1500

Also:
I could get the system I'm looking at from a builder as a custom set up for ~$50-100 more than if I build it myself. Is a 3 year warranty potentially worth that $50-100???

(I'm not really good at tech stuff, but I know people who work in Tech fields, who could probably be of more help for tech support)

idk if it's worth extra for warranty coverage

Why don't you wait for DX11 and watch the DX10 card prices drop?

DX11 isn't that far away; I'd honestly wait.

CERTAINLY NOT GTX260

You can get a 4850X2 for practically nothing these days, and the thing is a beast ! outperforms even the GTX280

otherwise get a 4850 or 4870

EDIT: Also, have a look at the OC-Z Vendetta II CPU cooler, I have it and I love it !

dx11 drops for consumers in october dx10 prices will drop huge then. if you can play bf2 on your current rig, wait and save. but if all you want is bf2... a 9800  or 4850 will more than max that out for less than 100 CAD.  Less if you buy from newegg.com's open box section.

If I was you, I'd wait for DX11. I was going to say that take PII 965 because it is the same price as PII 955 but then I looked at Newegg and saw that 955 is like 60$ cheaper. Anyways they are booth around 220€ in here.

I was thinking about it, but I read the reviews, and one of the people said just to up the multiplier a little and it's basically a 965 for $60 less.

Certainly NOT HD4850X2. Its loud, hot and there is  absolutely no reason to get multi-GPU in mid-range when you just could get HD 4890.

Especially since the first 16 cheapest 4890's are cheaper on newegg than 4850x2...

But I would really recommend wait a bit for the DX11 cards. I wouldn't buy a graphics card atm unless I absolutely had to.

Sadly, I doubt I will be able to do anything on this build until about January at the earliest, so I am definitely going to think about DX11 cards when we get more specs, as long as they are not too insanely out of my price range.

I'm so far behind with technology. One day, I opened the Future Shop flyer and seen that desktop computers came with 8GB of RAM. Wtf, where was I when this happened? I though 4 was a lot, and I only have 2GB in my computer.

yeah but thats oem's packing more cheap ram into a comp than people need so they can sell the comp for $300 extra.

4850x2 is quite abit faster than a single 4890 AND it is cheaper !

Hahah it runs out of memory even at 1680x1050, crossfire issues, very loud, hot....

Its a thing of past. Freak. There has never been any point in getting multi-GPU for midrange and there will not be before many flaws are fixed.

I think it was 9.1 that fixed Crossfire

and 4850X2 comes with 2Gigs of ram

Multi GPU on a single card is the way to go for max performance... going multi-card tho' that is a waste

You don't seem to know much about multi-GPU, so please don't continue. 9.1 cat was only CPU utilization fix, the 1GB 4850X2 runs out of memory,  2GB HD 4850X2 is more expensive than the HD 4890 (which is around 160€-170€ atm btw), and that last line is totally absurd and doesn't make  sense at all because X2 cards are basically same as 2 different cards...

I dunno, there was a point when dual 9600GTs looked quite attractive for mid-range....

But in general I completely agree.
