Also, not a lot of movies use mp4. You'd probably have to encode them yourself for a majority of them. I wouldnt buy it for playing movies anyways, it looks like a great step up from my ipod touch

Anyways, I just wish someone implemented what WD did with their Media Player drives, they support x264 mkv with HDMI output and 1080p support. Put those codecs into that (maybe not even 1080p, just 720p) and Microsoft would have a winner on their hands

Anyways, if size was your argument then the x264 rips are better than your xvid ones. Also, I wouldnt want to convert my videos since
a) I have close to 1000
b) It would take up all that space having copies of movies
c) It would take ages to convert all those
d) Transcodes always have significant quality loss

See edit. Most descent transcending program will let you adjust the quality. I don't think anyone is putting their entire movie collection (thousands) on their portable media players .

Have you ever done any encoding? Those one click encoders/transcoders are considered terrible by the community, it takes a good 8-10 hours on a good computer to do a proper DVD rip, much longer for a HD movie.
The "community" provides me with everything I need as it is on usenet (H.264/MPEG-4). I rarely need to use any type of encoding software. History has also shown that with demand .. after a release.. options and availability also increase.

There would still be a vast amount of movies unavailable since there is a far, far greater demand for x264 mkv rips than there are for mp4 ones.
Of course you are speaking about right now.. and of course the Zune HD has not been released. Yes there are more mkv files out there atm. If you look over this thread you will note that I said I would wait at least a month before considering purchase.. as of right now the zune hd looks more promising than the overpriced iPod touch. .. or "a step up".

It also has Nike+ integrated with no transmitter needed (you still need the in-shoe transmitter, but it has an RFID receiver built-in) as well as on-the-fly genius playlist creation, all included in the new iPhone 2.1 software. It also comes with new prices, available today: $229 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 32GB. That's $100 cheaper than before. Here are all the features
