This. To an extent. I'll try to give everyone I meet at least some level of respect. That being said, it takes very little for them to loose it.Beduin wrote:

well its a principle of ethics you show respect to those who are older and wiser, meaning you dont have like em but listen to them since they are wiser..... also u should respect other people 2 if they respect u, or if they respect ur family. Also certain elders like WW2 vets have been through a lot, they did a LOT for us, so u may not owe them anything directly but u may just show them ur gratitude and appreciation indirectly by being polite. Also at certain times u ask ur elders for advise since they been through some of the stuff u are going through now. Also its how the world works, u usually have the elder people or older people at the top of the organization, and then younger people doing all the work, so u can kind of have to show respect if u want to keep ur job! In every field of industry/military whatever it may be the elders are always at the top and the younger people/personnel has to pay attention to them and fulfill their needs! U dont have to respect them but if u dont it may cost u down the line somewhere, I would hate if someone younger was talking smack I would beat their ass lolKimmmmmmmmmmmm wrote:

I love talking to vet and survivors of the first Great Depression.
They have perspective and stories that cannot be gleaned from a book easily.

you respect elders in the context that they have lived a long life and has already faced what you are facing, and might have something to offer in the form of advice, other than that, an asshole is still an asshole regardless of age.
And the older someone is, the longer time they've spent earning it.BN wrote:

This is the truth right here. And I'm only 29.ATG wrote:

Respect everyone until they give you a reason not to, old or young.
Take two people of equal ability, give them equal opportunity but put them twenty years apart and the older one will be wiser.
Or more cynical. Possibly both.
Or more cynical. Possibly both.
This, but since elders have more experience in life they have had more chances to deserve it. In effect this means I generally respect elder people more than younger people. Also alot of people tend to be selfish twats untill their 30's or 40's. If they still haven't changed by then, theyre lost and will never earn any of my respect at least.BN wrote:

Made a thread about something similar some time ago ...

don't get why people think their respect is worth earning
Cause most youngsters think respect is worth more than anything else I guess ...RavyGravy wrote:

I don't respect elders who speak condescending to me just because of my age. That shows they're just, like you said, an asshole.
Even funnier are the people who are like, 4-6 years older than me calling me a kid and inexperienced. Yeah, when you have more than a year on your own and go through more life experiences, you can start acting like you're truly older than me. Until then, go fuck yourself.
What have you done to deserve respect?Macbeth wrote:
Am I the only person who finds the idea of respecting elders to be total bullshit?
Why does old age automatically mean I have to be nice to a person, show them respect, limit myself for their benefit, etc.
I don't feel that just because a person is older then me and somehow managed to stay alive longer that they deserve some sort of high level of respect that they often do not return.
So should we respect our elders because they are older or should we treat them as we do any other person?
I, for one, believe that respect should be based on merit rather then seniority.
Absolutely nothing, evidently.
