About 400 officers from state and national security services took part in at least 19 pre-dawn raids on properties in the southern city of Melbourne, Victoria state police said in a statement.

400 officers for 4 men?  19 raids and only four men?   Anyway, good job getting them before they did someting.

The Melbourne-based group was believed to be linked to an Islamic extremist group in Somalia, al-Shabaab, and had planned to use automatic weapons in their attack, Australian Federal Police Acting Commissioner Tony Negus said.

"The men's intention was to actually go into the Army barracks and to kill as many soldiers as they could before they themselves were killed,"

Good effort. I'd imagine they conducted the 19 raids in order to make sure they seized every single member/ affiliates in one hit. So others didn't go underground.

Its better to have 400 men caputring 4 people and doing 19 raids than having a shitload of our soldiers dead in barracks where they're supposed to be safe from that type of threat. Imagine... soldiers killed on home soil

We'd probably get so embarrased that we'd either commit an extra thousand troops to the A'Stan or pull out.

There is actually a sub-story to this. The media found out that these raids were happening prior to the warrants being executed. Had the potential for disaster.

They were going after a major barracks in Sydney (Holdsworthy I think it's called...)

And yeah. Media had a little say in this one...

The Somali connection interests me, if only because no one had taken it seriously before.

Better safe than sorry, and only 4 arrested, probably more processed.

The media generally doesn't, they have no idea when to shut up about some matters. Its like when they Prince Harry in Iraq. He worked fine until the media found out and then decided to film him, show what he looked like, where he was and what he'd be driving so he had to come home.

While I agree the media are often parasites, he sat down with them and gave an interview. He wasn't exactly thinking either.

Like that operation brought forward here when the media published photos of the actual documents?

Mind, the defense guy should have taken better care not to be seen with the documents.

In his defense, by the time the media found him, he might as well have sat down and given the interview anyways cause he was already screwed.  The media didn't need the interview to do a report and give out the rest of the information.

Where do you think they went when AFG was no longer hospitable for them?

So, I heard something on the news that the gates at bases in Aussie land are guarded by unarmed civilians.  Is that true?

I heard a comment in the news that the last government had decided to contract those duties out to private security type firms. That being said, when I stayed at RAAF Base Williamtown (our main fighter base), there were a shite load of RAAF Security Police dog squads and armed airfield defence guards. ><

EDIT: From www.news.com.au

This is apparently a picture from the army base in question..

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd ordered a review yesterday after calls for armed soldiers to guard our troops rather than unarmed civilians.

A little of both, tbh.

Al-Shabaab is closely aligned with Al Qaeda.

When AFG became less hospitable for the fuckers, they went to places more hospitable to them: Pakistan, the Horn of Africa, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula.
