A second bomb in two days attributed to the Basque separatist group Eta rocked the popular holiday destination of Majorca yesterday, killing two policemen after it detonated in one of the island's main tourist resorts.

So ETA wants a Basque region separate from Spain and France in the small area between the two countries. If it wasn't for them blowing shit up would you think they would have a case to make their own state there or do you think Spain and France have a right to rule over these people?

I'm glad the attack wasn't as devastating as most terrorist bombings are. I can't understand how any group could think killing people in such a way is going to gain them much support though.

well being as the Basques were there first i would think so. Spain and France have no right to rule over them, all France and Spain did was rob the country from the Basque people. Why? well because Basque Country has most the industry of Spain (most the the iron that was imported into Britain before ww2 was from Basque Country) the Romans done it first the French and the Spanish were next.

If the Basques really wanted independence (and not just a fringe terror group/ETA) they could easily organise and do it the non violent way, especially in these uber liberal EU days where any sort of serious violent crackdown on peaceful protestors/independence peoples by an EU country would be seen as ""

Basically in these days it's more down to the Basques themselves in their determination to achieve independence than France or Spain being ruthless occupiers of land and oppressors.

Yes it fucking does. And they never capitulated - they continually make arrests, carry out counter-intel, monitor borders, try terrorists and jail them, etc. - you know, real counter-terrorism.

Yeah it does, they may have capitulated to AQ in the eyes of some by pulling out of Iraq after Madrid was bombed by AQ, but it doesn't really have much to do with ETA's campaign which was there long before the whole War on Terrorism/Islamic Terrorists even started.

Even then, they didn't really capitulate to AQ. I thought the general definition of losing/capitulating to AQ is to let them take over your country and introduce Sharia law because they hate the West/Freedom.

They just fucked off realising Iraq is not their war (and never was) and they shouldn't bother fighting so far away for something that's only ever going to bring more harm to Spain than do good. Sounds reasonable to me.

...because the motivation is entirely different.  ETA has been a longstanding problem for Spain.  Al Quida is a peripheral issue for Spain.

For example, Al Quida doesn't have a strong presence in Spain, while ETA does.  Al Quida mostly just wants the West out of the Middle East, while ETA wants to carve out a separate country from Spain.

The 2 groups might be terrorists, but that's about all they have in common.

They did say FU to Al-Q, they sent troops to Afghanistan - for all the good that did. Iraq didn't have anything whatsoever to do with Al Qaeda - it was an unnecessary destabilising western hitjob on an important nation for strategic reasons.
