How to buy gold?

I'm in Europe and have online banking. Is it possible to buy physical gold or some paper certifying the gold, or what do gold buying people do?
I would rather not have to go down to the bank, and carry it home (not sure that is even possible?).
So how does it work? Is there an easy way to invest in gold instead of stocks?

Also what happens to stocks on NYSE if the dollar looses value? Nothing? Up? Down?
(I have some American stocks right now).

I believe the standard procedure is that you buy the gold through another company who keep it stored in their main safe so you can't physically touch it or take it home. No idea what the companies are or how you go about contacting them.

like this: dollar down 50%, gold up 50%, Euro unchanged - will I be richer or poorer?

If you have such a poor knowledge of the stock and commodities market, why are you interested in investing in something with a ridiculously high value, like gold? Investing in gold during this recession won't be the miracle cure to your financial ills- everyone has known of gold as a safe, non-depreciating investment for a loong time, there's not a whole lot of gain. Put your money into a building society savings account and enjoy the annual interest, it'll be the same as gold

Don't let anybody store it for you. Almost a pound of gold can be stored in a spam can buried in your back yard.

Also, don't buy any collectors shit or special runs from private mints. You just want gold.

It can be a little hard to undastan what's happening when U can watch video's like this:

I like to invest what little money I have in US companies, but since the FED have tripled the amount of dollar bills in the last year, I'm worried about US inflation. I don't have a goldmine, I have to buy the stuff and was just wondering if it can be done like with stocks, or if You have to find some company that will store it for a huge annual commission (which is crap).

Life is so much easier when there's no crysis (pension stocks are up - no worries for loosing my job - payback of debt etc).

Don't buy the ETF, its too steady right now. Wait till actual gold goes down to about 900 again and then pick up a certificate for one- its just as good as owning the actual gold/.
