Government scientists said Thursday that the periodic warming of water in the tropical Pacific Ocean, which can affect weather around the world, has returned.

The Pacific had been in what is called a neutral state, but forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say the sea surface temperature climbed to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit above normal along a narrow band in the eastern equatorial Pacific in June.

In addition, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said temperatures in other tropical regions are also above normal, with warmer than usual readings as much as 975 feet below the ocean surface.
Might be the push we need to bring California out of this near-decade drought

Seriously the best news that could be for me. I depend on rain, and I went into this collapse weak as hell from three plus years of drought.

The last time this was around, I was booked out 12 weeks and could not even do estimates for two weeks. People were calling me desperate, offering $500.00 on top of my already high prices.

The problem I see is that the labor pool has shrunk a lot because many have fled the area. That's right, fled. So, it will be hard to ramp back up quickly.

Things are so fucked up right now; I laid off my office girl last year. She bounced from job to job, layoffs everytime, moved to San Fransico, retreated back and became homeless. So, instead of a manly shop full of tools my sanctuary looks more like a dirty bedroom and the numb bitch bought a small dog because she was lonely, so now my shop smells like dog.

Stryyky came into my shop pre-crash. We had talked about him working for me. At that time I had seven installers, two office girls, an estimator and one full time shop guy.

Now I have one part timer, one live in office girl that I don't pay. I am broke.

Let it rain God. please. Bring it on.

There is massive constipation in the market; people need work done but they are afraid to spend money. Well, the rain will force the issue and I can get off my knees and back in black. I have learned a lot from this crash. I will not be weakened again.

Part of what happens is you get in denial. You hold off on the layoffs until you just can't make payroll anymore. No workers, means no capacity to work. Next time I will cut people loose the minute I stop turnning a profit. I wasted over 200k trying to maintain the status quo.

Never again.

Didn't want to start a new thread about weather and climate change...

Interesting look at climate change fears over the last 100 years or so....

Actually, Spark has provided evidence on multiple occasions.  By contrast, you're not exactly contributing to this thread in a constructive way.
Nope, I am not, was just trying out how the other half posts.......don't know how they manage it on a consistent basis.
I don't want to derail this too much, but there really isn't any debate that global warming is occurring.  The debate is what's causing it.

Some say natural cycles are most to blame, others say pollution, still others say solar activity.

Nevertheless, a direct line can be drawn between global warming and changing rainfall patterns, which often result in droughts.  Africa is currently experiencing the most extreme changes in climate, with a lot of the most turbulent areas suffering droughts.  Quite a bit of warfare over there is tied to famines caused by droughts.

In terms of water use... anyone see last week's Australian Story? I don't know a lot about Peter Andrews but his ideas certainly make sense. Trap the water on floodplains with man-made barriers. Slow it down so it doesn't wash away all your topsoil. Ground cover ground cover ground cover.

I didnt see it , but heard about it though. Seems to make good sense to me. It will mean that farmers will have to change their methods, which they hate, but it would be worth it in the long run.

Well the main reason bureaucrats don't like it is because it's so unconventional. He wants you to plant weeds and anything that'll grow to get ground cover, hold in the topsoil and give it some 'food'. Apparently as the soil improves the weeds die off, outcompeted by more useful plants.

Thats true. But farmers had a prob with animals living in the new growth area and eating their crops. Farmers are usually very opposed to change as well.

Well anything we can do to thicken and improve the soil (which is thin and woefully poor in most cases) is good.

Now if we can also fix salinity...

But yes, we certainly need many, many more ideas on how to use water more efficiently, since we haven't got too much.

How bad was the california drought?

It can be done, but its a big job, and time consuming. It would be hard to find a govt that forward thinking. We can only hope .

I believe what Andrews does to land helps with salinity levels too if the land is sorted before it gets too toxic for plants.

El Nino = less storms? Is that because of a slightly cooler North Atlantic/Caribbean?
