I really cant decide wether or not its worth shelling out more £££ for an i7 build.

I only use my pc for gaming, mild photoshop work, office, playing music, watching movies, and browsing.

If i go i7 i have to make do with a 15" tft for 4 months, If i go C2d i can buy a 24" samsung.

I'd rather have a nice big monitor than loads of CPU speed I don't really need anyhow.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

The Q9650 does not far fall behind an i7 920, even when clocked at the same speed. - As much as Panzer would not believe.

Games are still heavily Mhz dependent. I can't find the [H]OCP cpu round up, and I've got to go. It had the 920, Q9650, AMD x3 and x4 at stock and 3.6Ghz.

the place i7 really beats C2Q is in SLI/CF scaling

I think you just owned yourself big time. The article conclusion says clearly that i7 is fastest, and the fact that with faster gfx cards its going to make even bigger differences.

Biggest gap I saw was 6fps.

And that IS with 4870X2 crossfirex.

Try harder.

Minimum fps was 42% higher with i7. try that

"The average framerate was 76.1 FPS on the Core i7 920 at 3.6GHz, with a minimum of 54 FPS. The average framerate on the QX9650 at 3.66GHz was 68 FPS with a minimum of 38 FPS."

I definitely saw a 12fps average in one of them and like ~20fps difference in minimum

I find it very interesting that it is so hard to admit that QX6850 which is priced the same as i7 920, is slower. Life sucks.

I openly say right here that Gulftown i9 indeed is faster than my i7.

back to topic; C2D and the monitor.

Not worth the $800 premium imo. Exact reason why I didn't upgrade to i7. Yes i7 is faster, but as stated in the article, the increase did not improve their experience.

i7 920 $280
EVGA x58 vanilla $300
OCZ reaper DDR3 $120
=
$700

Memory prices have gone down. Forgive me, I don't check them every week.

Gimme a break you are comparing new i7 build costs for free Q9650 build? LOL

Comparing the prices for me to upgrade to an i7. Existing C2Q owners have no need to upgrade.

$600 for a Q9650 build with a $200 780i ftw and $65 ocz 1066 reapers.

How ever, most people would get a Q9550, which is $100 cheaper.

For a $200 difference I would honestly go with a LGA 775 build, allowing me to get a second graphics card, or even a single one if I don't have a substantial one already.

well you get more ram too for that.

and the OP damn sure is not upgrading from Q9650! Reaper just upgraded from E8xxx to i7.

You can SELL your existing stuff like he. You can easily get a lot momey from that C2Q rig.

Alright.

Back to the topic at hand.

OP, the monitor size will depend on your current gfx card. A C2D with a 24in samsung will not perform well with an X800XT for example. ( panza )

An i7 on a 15in will be a waste as well.

If you could meet some where in the middle, keeping the i7 would be the best choice. Not everyone needs a 24in. Even a 19in will be an improvement from that 15in.

There are things that won't run any faster with GTX 295...

GT300 and Intel X25-M 80GB SSD on my plans...

lower scale PII is the best compromise here. Get nice rig and screen.

3D chess tbh.

Just remembered, OP should wait for i5. Not a bad performance loss, should be able to fit it in his budget including a nice screen.
