Good point.  What's your favorite place you've been out of the U.S./Canada?
hard to decide really. Yellowstone is absolutely stunning, spent a whole week looking for bears with the cousins. Was an absolute experience.
But vancouver in winter is hard to beat

Yeah, Vancouver is pretty nice from what I've heard.

The only bad thing I've heard about it is that it's incredibly expensive.

3 weeks and you'll be hard pressed to see all that you can, but for sheer scenic beauty you gotta head out west.  The route through the Dakotas to Yellowstone and on to the Northwest or California would be ideal, but going all the way there and back wouldn't leave much time to actually do anything in 3 weeks.

Good luck though, the U.S. really is a pretty amazing place...you're sure to see some amazing stuff if you put 3 weeks into traversing it.
Yeah, I did think 3 weeks wasn't long enough. Back when he was 20 though, my dad managed to go from Toronto to Vancouver and down to LA in 4 weeks (I think) on the buses by driving at night and sleeping on them, and then sightseeing in the day, so I'm guessing I should be able to get a fair way. Obviously I have the disadvantage of needing to get back.

@Turq: Vancouver and back was one idea I had

I've been to NYC and Chicago before and the surrounding areas, and whilst I imagine NYC is hard to avoid because it's a transportation hub, I can miss both off my list in order to see as much as possible. I might have to schedule another trip for the summer once I'm done with school, just need to make sure I book my flights back for as late as possible.

You obviously want to drive across the country, go the northern route on 80 and 90 first and hit the Black Hills/Badlands and Yellowstone.  Then you can either go onto California and Visit San Fran then either go down california and go back across in the deep south or go back up to Sacramento and get on 50 and go across the middle.  I don't know what exactly you could see on 50 or the southern route.
If I knew where you were starting from then I could just enter that and all the way points into google earth and give at least the northern route to you that way rather then drawing on that picture of yours.

I keep running various ideas through Google maps, and it's looking like I should be able to go a long way in that time. They're coming up with insanely optimistic views on journey times, but still, assuming an average speed of 80kph I could get to Las Vegas and back in 90 hours of travelling. Which given I'm planning on sleeping on buses is basically no time at all. Obviously I don't just want to just go there, but it puts it into perspective.

Wat? How come New Jersey isn't on anyones list? The amazing vista of nothing doesn't intrigue you? It is beckoning....On the other hand, Philadelphia has a shitload of history....the U.S. Constitution was drafted here, not that anyone uses it anymore, and blah blah blah just wiki the shit if interested. 3 weeks is not enough, you'll leave satisfied, but also knowing theres so much more. Id also highly recommend replacing some of the bus travel with a plane ticket...do the east coast first, since your starting towards there, then fly across to your next stop, like maybe Colorado or Arizona for the Grand Canyon or some shit, then bus the rest of the west coast. I took a train from Philly to LA before, absolute waste.Ended up trading the train tickets back for plane tickets. True story.

This is probably a stupid idea as it's far too far in reality, I think. But I'd love to do this.

https://xs140.xs.to/xs140/09250/usloop458.jpg
@80kph (50mph) which is slightly slower than how fast a bus would travel, I make it out to be 140 hours of travelling. Which at 12 hours of travelling per day comes out to just under 12 days of travelling. That's obviously best case scenario, and assuming I can get a 12 hour bus every night. So yeah, probably pretty unrealistic in 3 weeks and 12 hours of bus travel per day would most likely give me haemorrhoids.

https://xs940.xs.to/xs940/09261/usloop2339.jpg
This is probably a lot more realistic. Half the distance so it's certainly possible. I get to visit more cities, which is good, but not as varied, which is less good. Plus I could cut out St Louis and the southern cities if I felt pushed for time.

But yeah, go nuts with suggestions BF2s!

Tampa is much cleaner.. and there is a lot more to do. Plus we've got this epic sidewalk by the bay... I visit Miami at least once a year.. but fk, I'd put Orlando over it.

imo, the best part of america (in terms of landscape) is the south (tennessee, alabama, mississippi, georgia, louisiana)

second best part is the rocky mountains area

third best part is the west (-coast)

fourth best part is new york

Boston - go see Pymouth Rock and be disappointed, take a day to see Martha's Vinyard (summertime = drink with actors & actresses, and their adopted asian babies)

Wash DC

And New York.

Try to find someone who has a house/boat/cottage at Lake George, NY.  Make them your best friend.

Oh, and since you'll be at school - you'll need to do spring break in Florida.  Make Mardi Gras  in New Orleans if you can.

Going out west - Yellowstone or Grand Canyon.
