Nasa has successfully launched two spacecraft to the Moon on missions that will pave the way for a return to the lunar surface by US astronauts.

LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) and a crater observation mission blasted off from Florida on an Atlas V rocket.

Data gathered by LRO will help mission planners select future landing sites and scout locations for lunar outposts.

The second mission will send a rocket crashing into the Moon to scour the debris plume for evidence of water ice.

The Atlas main launcher, carrying both payloads, roared up from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 2232 BST (1732 local time) - the third and last of Thursday's three launch opportunities.

Thunderstorms around the launch site prevented a launch of the rocket at the original time of 2212 BST (1712 local time).

LRO will enter a low polar orbit around the Moon at an altitude of around 50km (31 miles) - the closest any spacecraft has continually orbited Earth's natural satellite.

It will spend at least one year orbiting the Moon, using its six instruments to collect detailed information about the lunar environment.
I find this launch of a probe more interesting than say, one to Mars, because the moon is the only non-Earth object man has travelled to. It'll be cool to see the old remnants of the previous Apollo missions still where they were the last time astronauts left

Wow, not a single inb4kmar. I watched it launch live a few hours ago on NASA tv. The weather over here was not permitting a view from outside .

If ya missed it.

Would this involve Warren Moon at all?

At 4hrs since launch, I'm traveling at 3.5 km/s (~8000 mph), at 48,907 km from Earth. Another 311,000 km or so to go to reach Lunar swingby!

Guess they missed the poles back in the Apollo days?

It doesn't make sense to probe and overfly areas they allready have dug samples from.

The moon has captured lro. It's now in Lunar orbit. NASA makes it look so easy.

They are mapping the moon for landing sites and to find a spot for a permanent human outpost.. They are using technology that did not exist in the apollo era to get more detailed information. LRO is the first step of many missions.

It doesn't sound like you've made any attempt to actually understand the mission goals.
http://lunar.gsfc.nasa.gov/mission.html
The United States and its partners have begun a program to extend human presence in the solar system, beginning with a return to the Moon. The return to the Moon will enable the pursuit of scientific activities that address our fundamental questions about the history of Earth, the solar system and the universe - and about our place in them. It will allow us to test technologies, systems, flight operations and exploration techniques to reduce the risk and increase the productivity of future missions to Mars and beyond. It will also expand Earth's economic sphere to conduct lunar activities with benefits to life on the home planet.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is the first step in this endeavor, an unmanned mission to create the comprehensive atlas of the Moon's features and resources necessary to design and build a lunar outpost. LRO follows in the footsteps of the predecessors to the Apollo missions - missions designed in part to search for the best possible landing sites (such as the Ranger, Lunar Orbiter and Surveyor missions). However, building a lunar outpost implies extended periods on the lunar surface and so the goals of LRO go beyond the requirements of these previous missions. LRO focuses on the selection of safe landing sites, identification of lunar resources, and the study of how the lunar radiation environment will affect humans.
  • Human Civilization- Extend human presence to the Moon to enable eventual settlement.
  • Scientific Knowledge- Pursue scientific activities that address fundamental questions about the history of Earth, the solar system and the universe - and about our place in them.
  • Exploration Preparation-Test technologies, systems, flight operations and exploration techniques to reduce the risks and increase the productivity of future missions to Mars and beyond.
  • Global Partnerships- Provide a challenging, shared and peaceful activity that unites nations in pursuit of common objectives.
  • Economic Expansion-  Expand Earth's economic sphere, and conduct lunar activities with benefits to life on the home planet.
  • Public Engagement- Use a vibrant space exploration program to engage the public, encourage students and help develop the high-tech workforce that will be required to address the challenges of tomorrow.

I take it this will build on the work of the Japanese Kaguya spacecraft?  I hope we get some good data out of it.  Kmarion is not the only space-crazy nut around here.  I have to drive past the Johnston Space Center everytime I visit my wife's parents.

That's a long video. When do you get to the part where the shadow moves and suddenly the video feed goes dark?

Was watching a documentary with James May about flying to the moon last night. Will never get tired of watching the footage taken on the moon.
