$100 headphones > $1000+ speakers. That said, the people over at http://www.head-fi.org/forums/ think it's perfectly acceptable to drop $1000 on a pair of headphones.

I like my Grado MS1's for music and my Audiotechnica ATH A500's for games.
Dohoho. Of course they say that, they're a headphone forum.

That said, I lurked there for a while. I find that there is a concentration of "modern audiophiles" as I call them, there. People who don't really know anything about the subject, but only go after the price and the number of three-letter acronyms on their stuff.

Now, I'm not arguing that headphones don't have good price:performance, they do, but to a certain extent.
I am by no means an expert on audio, but I was under the impression that good headphones/earphones will always sound better because you are hearing the sound directly from the source with no ambient interference. With speakers, there are more variables that affect the sound, such as the acoustics of the room.

Electrostatics are awesome. I once almost had a chance to get my hands on a set of vintage Marantz ones, but I foolishly wandered off.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I listen to music on Youtube using two-piece Harmon Kardon speakers from 2001, and its fine for me. Is that a good thing?

The Marantz electrostatics were designed by Stax. Marantz only made the amplifier and built the phones.

@nukchebi0: I'm just surprised that you don't get annoyed at navigating your music.

Solid-state guitar amps, goes against nature a little. Probably decent for live stuff, but I doubt many would want to record with it.

Try it. Turn the effects off, turn the bass up and treble down. Then just hook something up to line in.

I'm assuming it'd be better than the sub on my current setup, but everything plugs into there. I dunno.

Not really. Cambridge make some quite decent stuff. I think you're best off just leaving it as it is.

Guitar amps are poor for amplifying music, because their speaker cabinets are designed for the high-treble and mid-range frequencies of the electric guitar- not the full-range of typical audio.

You mean like speakers or headphones?

Headphones. Electrostatic speakers have their niche, but they're dead tech.

So glad I did.
