Not as if either of you are doing anything useful with your audio equipment or musical passion, are you? Neither of you DJ at a basic level, let alone play an instrument or produce music. All you do is listen to 4 FLAC albums in your bedroom, whilst caring more about the fucking technical wizzardry of producing the sound than actually appreciating the SOUND itself. That's not cool, that's just pointless E-Penis geekery. My processor has more gigahertz than yours; my HD has a higher rpm than yours; my barely-used audio equipment has a higher fidelity than yours... who the fuck cares, this sort of one-up competition is supposed to die out on the school playground.

Yeah, I have one of those. Need to replace the needle though.

There's hardly any debate over the fact that analogue > digital sound. Digital uses smapling--not all the sound is there.

However, digital is popular because of its versatility and ease of use--imagine carrying 4000 songs with you on vinyl! That'd be hell.

In fact, little anecdote: I'm the audio tech guy at my school, I run the coffeehouses. The first one this year we were digital, which was great as it was metal (needs a lot of editing to be audible). This one, we used a 1980s vintage tape recorder. It was so awsm. The sound is beautiful!! (sigh)

So true

I agree totally, digital is so useful as a storage media, but as the old age debate go's Analogue is better then Digital! I don't know, I could bore people with so much information, believe me I could!
Each to there own in my opnion, I prefer analouge due to my experience using it, whilst working in studios, nightclubs and doing testing. But the majority of music that I listen to these days, simply on the basis of ease of use is digital. One thing that I will mention is the use of tape players, as you mentioned before the sound is awesome, even better was the use in the early eighties of VHS and Betamax players as a main recording device, still to this day I use an old VHS player to record masters too as the quality is awesome.

Brilliant
My favourite bit of kit has got to be my Technics, firstly, but I have a very old Solid State Tape Recorder (Reel 2 Reel) which is still amazing to this day! It always surprises me with its quality, can tape from 30 minutes up to something like 6 hours! Obviously at 6 hours the quality is terrible, but at 30 mins its amazing. Saying that the speed is measured in centimetres! Solid State tape players have got to be the best recording media as they have the advantage of being able to high quality audio in a small and compact form (Well small-ish!) I use to go around the tape players that I owned and adjust the speeds on them for better playback and recording, you use to be able to get a small screwdriver and alter the speed from the front of the player, similar to manually eject a CD? Have 1 portable tape player that was pre-speeded with a 1khz single recorded on it and match the new player to that, oh such fun Tapes didn't last as long, but hey the outcome was so much better! Only problem was that when other people wanted to play cassette's etc: they sounded like the chipmunks! But hey I am old and fuddy these days, so analogue will always be my downfall Karma back though.

I have 2 Technic 1200s.  I don't care too much about the quality of the sound, I just like the way records sound.  Something about the crackle and pop of a record gives it some sort of life that I love.

sometimes it isnt about all these shitty figures you throw around, it's how it all feels at the end of the day.

Example, ive been in a focus ST many times. while it's meant to be unrefined, and the torque will steer you to hell, it's how it makes you feel

I've got Creative Soundblaster Audigy, and I never have it full volume. Sounds great.

Is quite annoying when you have in-game sounds low, so you can hear people on vent.. you have to put it up to like, 4.5/5 and you get hissy background noise.

But whatever, does the job, got them for free.

So... If I wanted to get a good set of speakers for under 200 CAD and preferably 5.1 for some movie watching, what should I look at?  It doesnt have to be the best thing in the world obviously since I have a budget, but whats a few good sets in that range?

Good and under $200 doesn't work. The best you could possibly get would be (and that's with me taking the liberty of stretching you 50% more)

a) 1980s Koss or Klipsch, or something like that (you have to make sure you try before you buy though)

b) Bose 161s. http://www.bose.ca/controller?url=/shop … /index.jsp

c) Klipsch RB-10s http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/rb-10.aspx These are the best you're going to get with your budget.

c) Yamaha TSS-15 (these are supposedly quite good) http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/products/ … SS-15W.asp The Yamaha shop in Scarborough should have them. Don't know about TO proper.

Obviously supposing that you have an amp and cables (wanted a good set of speakers)

WinCh, that 5.1 Altec seems quite good, especially for the price.

EDIT: Hell, after looking them up a bit closer, they're actually really, really well designed. The sub uses techniques that require half an A4 of formulas to get right, and it certainly looks like they used that A4. The amplifier is a bit cheap, but it's still times better than any of Logitech's offerings.

Last edited by Freezer7Pro (2009-06-03 00:21:54)

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
