Ok next month we are gunna take a week and go to back Europe. Not sure if we want to do something on continental Europe or go England, Scotland or Ireland.

What we are looking for is scenery and history. We are not interested in tourist traps. Any suggestions?

Also if you have any other ideas other than the England Ireland or Scotland, I am all ears.
I wouldn't touch England, Scotland or Ireland with a 10foot barge pole. Don't get me wrong...they are all nice places but if it's your first time in Europe there are so many more exciting places you could go.

The Mediterranean coast- (Italy, France, Spain)- The coastline of these areas are absolutely beautiful and warm. You even would have the opportunity to visit the backcountry about 45mins inland which has completely different scenery and imo shouldn't be missed. Varegg noted some good areas in Italy that are pretty culturally different to what you'll ever see if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

Depends what you're looking for but I'd also highly recommend visiting the alps during the summer. There are some good areas south of the Italian-French boarders which offer some amazing hiking with cheap accommodation options.

Germany-nice place

Eastern Europe=is very meh imo although it depends where you go. Fatherted mentioned Prague and I've heard that place is beautiful but stay clear of Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, etc. I found these places to be pure missions and too damn warm during the summer.

Russia-no

Norway-A lot of people think it's cold there during the summer. It's actually the complete opposite and is the most awesome place I've ever been from June through mid september. Although it's ridiculously expensive it's a fucking nice place and even better if you're single. I honestly couldn't imagine a better place to be atm.

Take a trip to Barcelona-from what I've heard you definitely wouldn't want to miss out.

Update:
Well here is what happened, before I left for Iraq last year, I promised my sons, when I got home, we would take them anywhere in the world they wanted to go for vacation. I kinda sorta forgot that promise when I planned for Europe last month. I remembered it last week, (they didn't even mention it), so I asked them, they told me they wanted to see Alaska. So we flew to Seattle yesterday and are booked on a week long Alaskan cruise, leaving tomorrow.

Europe will have to wait for next year, I will wait to see how disappointed I am ( if at all) when I get back. Not sure if Alaska can top the Alps or not. Regardless, promise fulfilled.

Ireland's weather is a bit unpredictable but if you're looking for a change from blue sky America it will certainly be that. If you pick Ireland stay west/northwest/southwest coast - rural real Ireland, not cosmoplitan Dublin.

Come to Northern Ireland. Come see the racists intimidate people out of their homes. Maybe the odd scum bag getting shot in the knees and elbows. Stop by various sites where mass murders took place. Bundle of laughs.
Na seriously. You want history and nice friendly ppl, come to Ireland. And come to the North, its no where near as bad as its made out.

ROFL, who told you the UK and Ireland were "European"?

Nah, only an American could ask for "nice places in Europe". No one can possibly awnser that question properly. Europe knows bigger cultural differences over a few hunderd kilometers than the US over thousands.

Russia is great and you'll be cured of any prejudices on the while. I mean really great, I can't emphasize how much. It might be a bit more complicated to get in though, unless you plan on staying in Russia the whole time and in Russia only (Russian visa are a pain to acquire).

Greece is the grandfather of modern civilization. It has a tragic nostalgic beauty that leaves you horribly melancholic; everything there reminds you of glory past. Greece is definitely to be recommended if you want scenery and history. I think Burwhale's first image is from the Cyclades, which are beautifull but I would not recoomend them for a one week trip as they are too limiting.

As a Dutch guy I'd advice you not to go here. Not that we don't want you here, but if you can do one week in Europe, Holland is about the last place you should see.

If I had too pick one place for you though, I'd say the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy. It is relatively close to where it all happened in June 1944, so you can visit the graves, Point du Hoc, Sainte Mere Eglise, Omaha Beach etc., but also medieaval stuff like the Bayeux tapestry. I think for you as an American, who hasn't been in Europe that often, it is very interesting and has many things you can relate to as well. You will be very welcome there too as they've never forgotten in 60 years. If you drive through the countryside it is not unusual to come by a remote farm which has a brand clean American flag draped over it, just like that for no apparent reason. Normandy in general is beautifull, but this particular region has an Atlantic coast too and tourists are scarce as it is largely a rural area. You can visit the Mont St. Michel if you want to (but it is the most touristic place in all of France). Normandy is also one of the best regions in France regarding food imo, particular pastry. You can even make a one day trip to the UK, the channel islands are only 29 kilometers off the Cotentin's Atlantic coast.

Seriously you should narrow down first, then the Europeans on this forum we can make some more usefull suggestions. I'll be happy to provide more details if you do.

We had a change of plans. Keeping a promise I made to my sons to taske them to Alaska, we are now in Seattle to go on a week long Alaskan cruise tomorrow.

However, I do appreciate all the advice, I do find it helpful to ask on here when going someplace new.

Yeah, not sure how I will feel about being stuck on a boat either. I hope the destinations and the sights will make up for it however.

By the way, did you go to Misty Fjords when you docked in Ketchican? ( if you docked there).

If so, was it worth the sea plane ride or boat ride to it?

We didn't go to Ketchican. We went to Skagway and then to Juneau. We did a helicopter tour of the mountains in Juneau(I think), that was pretty cool. The other one was going to see the glaciers, which the cruise ship pulled right up next to. Other than that it was cold, cloudy, windy, and rainy. We went in August 2004.

Ok, well, I will try and keep an open mind about it. I am not much of a cruise ship guy either, so we will see. Appreciate the input.

Me neither, never done one.
Did enjoy the train ride to Alice Springs though, two days of featureless desert, trick is not to worry about the cost, take in the scenery and relax.
