Stop embarrassing yourself. Both will slowly kill the world - please tell me how that can be stopped in these "pure" systems. For instance, pure capitalism will result in no accountability for externalities like pollution and global warming which would head out of control and slowly kill the world as we know it.

Actually I'd argue capitalism wouldn't do that. As that would mean an end to the profiteering.

What capitalism would do is end up with an oligarchy controlling the entire market with monopolies.

Profiteering coincides with lack of concern for future consequences. It isn't sustainable. There'd be oligopolies before the world ended, but it would end.

The fallacy in the OP is the idea that by paying taxes you're getting some product in return.
You're not, you're making a contribution to society, of which you are part.

Okay, call it something else, but stability is where the profit is, and if you can do the same thing forever and turn a profit doing it you will. Capitalism doesn't strictly mean exploiting everything until there's nothing left, it means a free market, and theoretically a free market could be stable.

And how are the resources for these markets provided? Basic economic problem .. economics 101. It just can't work. Stability will not coincide with profit because as soon as these 'rules' are in place there will be immediate, short term exploitation.

In my perfect theoretical model nobody is stupid enough to go for short term exploitation of the system over long term benefits. Pity the real world doesn't work that way.

And thus we come back to the fact that pure capitalism does not work. Same goes for communinsm; if every single human would only want each other's best, pure communism would work and it would work goddamn well. Pity the real world doesn't work that way.

It's nice how you can boil socialism down to 10 guys drinking in a bar... that's exactly what life is like here in Europe.

Well done, Move to the front of the class. For your next assignment I want you to sum up Communism using four guys and a tractor.

You guys wouldn't know socialism if it took a shit in your mouth.

For starters who are the guys who are drinking for free and not paying any tax whatsoever? If you're on welfare in a socialist state your money will at best stretch to one night out a week and it may mean going hungry for the other 6 nights. Secondly, I doubt very much that the working, middle-class professionals would be slumming it in the bar with the freeloaders... that would lead to some interesting arguments and accusations after a drink or two. But hey, why let reality get in the way of a nice dumbed-down metaphorical OP?

What? Generalizations? In MY Debate and Serious Talk?

What people really REALLY need to do is shut the fuck up before they know what an ideology or "ism" means.

There's no socialism in the Europe I know, but Social Democracy. This Social Democracy is indeed more leftist than what the Democrats practice in the U.S, but I would definitely not say that nobody in the worlds largest economy (if you don't count the EU) would know jack shit about socialism. Besides, the difference is only subtle, and the two are closer to one another every day.

Jesus, talk about flamebaiting.

By the way, if someone wants to look at hard-core capitalism and right wing extravaganza in action, turn your heads to Italy. Yes, Europe.

"a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole."

sounds simple enough to me.  i dont know why you all get bent out of shape arguing semantics.

Why then does Obama get continually labelled as a Socialist in the US when he would probably be considered centre-right wing if he were over here!?

But seriously, obviously there are plenty of people in the US who know exactly what socialism is but sadly there are also plenty of people who can't tell the difference between Soviet communism and social democracy! It goes both ways though, there are plenty of people here in Europe who have a warped view of social services in the US.

He gets labeled socialist on these forums by flamebaiters that give extreme names to moderate things. All people within a nation are not alike, d-uh.

And as for Obama, he's IMO centre-left.

To get things clear for everyone: I myself am a member of the Social Democratic Party in Finland. I'm a leftist. I don't look at capitalism as the great satan from the west, neither do I look at communism as the answer to all our problems. Both allegations are false.

Centre-left by American standards, slightly centre-right by European standards. Unfortunately lowing represents a sizable cross-section of American society (hence why FOX News is so popular) but like you say, he does not represent American society in its entirety... obviously.

the news during the day is not what makes them #1 brad.  you guys need to wrap your heads around this, because a lot of you do not get it.  news is the news.  all of them do a good job with it for the most part.  its the opinion shows during primetime that make the money.
