Maybe less so now, but certainly 10 years ago Jordan would definitely be globally recognised. You need to think outside the UK for a minute.Switch wrote:
Although Pele is arguable, there is no way Michael Jordan is more recognisable than David Beckham. As others have said, Basketball just isn't popular enough globally. If you showed everyone in the world a photograph of each, I'm certain more would recognise Beckham over Jordan.Zimmer wrote:

Yeah, outside of America Michael Jordan aint all that. If we're talking globally I'd probably go with David Beckham.
Tiger Woods is a good shout though.

I am, I don't particularly like the man, but you have to admit that Beckham is massive on just about every continent. He's a global cash cow.ghettoperson wrote:

It's a difficult question which we'll never know the answer to, since we can't really compare athletes from different generations fairly.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.
If you polled the entire world based on total body count, I'd say Yao Ming.
Tiger Woods
Muhammad Ali
Michael Jordan
Babe Ruth
Yao Ming
Wayne Gretzky
Hulk Hogan << lol

Macho Man Randy Savage?
yeah he would win the most votes lol, but the point is to ID the person who is well known in countries even where that sport is not that of a big deal....Ilocano wrote:

like oh yeah I know that guy he plays golf even though u never played golf in ur life
but yeah Pele has to be on top with Ali, Jordan was up there with an older generation but he is still somewut known based on wut he did in the past.
I think Kobe has sold more jerseys in China than Yao ...but Yao always gets more All-Star votes.Ilocano wrote:

Ali/Cassius Clay, would be my pick then.blademaster wrote:

As for Pele, I didn't know about him until after that Stallone German prison soccer movie.

Ali without a doubt. The man is an icon. I'd say he's a million times more identifiable on a global scale than a Michael Jordan or a David Beckham.

What, you didn't know stryyker was a homo too Patton?
Mohammed Ali and Pele. Im leaning towards Pele though simply because football (soccer) is the worlds biggest sport. Many kids today dont even know Mohammed Ali but have no doubt to who Pele is.
