This is troubling, it would appear the EU is preparing to vote on a measure that will take the internet as we know it and bundle it into 'content packages' with a sliding scale of options available from your Internet Service Provider. It sounds as though it will attempt to convert the open internet that we currently have to a business model similar to that of the old music industry i.e. a handful of major players (ISP's) that manage and distribute content. Imagine the scenario... you can have the "full access" package where you can go to YouTube, Netflix, iTunes, Amazon etc., the "middle of the road" package where you're allowed to watch a certain number of YouTube videos and full access to Amazon, Gmail etc., and the "restricted" package where you can check emails and news but are not able to watch videos or listen to music online. Imagine Sky Television except with the internet...

I don't think it would be possible, people with very limited know how can already steal cable tv, an army of enraged computer programmers would break the system in a matter of hours.

I know, I think this every time I hear about something the EU are doing. You never hear "The EU have decided that they should play a smaller role in fucking peoples lives up", it's always, "The EU have decided you have too many freedoms so they're going to take them all away from you" or "The EU have decided that you need to pay more tax and they're going to use it all to give to some fucking French farmers".

That's the other thing. It doesn't make any sense. Other than for profit reasons for ISPs, why would they do this? Do all MEP's own ISP's? In what possible scenario is this beneficial to either the law makers or to the people of the EU?

I remember that one from not too long ago when they were attempting to abolish gender-orientated titles. In the grand scheme the money wasted on that could have been used in something fucking worthwhile.

It sounds like the EU needs to be disbanded.  NOW.

How the hell does the EU have authority to do that anyway? Surely something like that would be upto the ISP themselves, and any ISP stupid enough to do something like this would just get killed in the competitive ISP market

I'm writing a letter to my MEP's. I'd encourage you all to do the same.

Yeah, it'd be a simple process to get around it. That said, if I can avoid the hassle I'd like that.

I think that's the point. If if they pass it then it will be a legal requirement for all ISPs

In terms of why, I doubt it's to do with profit. More likely that they just want to ease everyone into the idea of losing net neutrality and handing over control to the governments. Whether they approve it or not it'll be a laugh when they fail miserably to enforce it.

Here comes the Aquinas Protocol!

Seriously though the only way to truly filter and control net traffic would be an AI designed for it.

Anyway, thankfully politicians only care about themselves.

No rational leader would advocate this without fear of losing any election hopes he/she had. Germany and UK would be fairly anti this i reckon.

For me? Fantastic, having the basement finished with a home theater, another full kitchen a full bathroom and another bedroom, cheap cars to buy, jobs going well, and even if I got laid off again, I am marketable and will simply go to work someplace else. Thanks for asking.
