Afghanistan has the very real potential to be a Vietnam scenario, akin to Bush's Iraq. It will still be going when he leaves office and be a major issue for voters.

I hope that results are demanded soon by the American people, despite the Obama supporters love, the line has to be drawn somewhere.
There's a quick but very deadly solution to the Afghanistan conflict.

Invade Pakistan.  Might as well...   Pakistan doesn't look like a complete shithole only because it's next to Afghanistan, but it's only a another coup away from becoming like Afghanistan.  Everyone worries about Iran, but Pakistan is the real threat in terms of nukes.

It did work for WW2.

Now, admittedly, I'm not saying this is anywhere near as dire as WW2 was, but...   that war did stimulate our economy.

If a war is large enough, it does actually lead to economic growth.  Iraq didn't do this because it was heavily privatized and too small of a conflict to really benefit the economy as a whole.

Pakistan, on the other hand, has over 100 million people and is much larger than Iraq.  It would be one hell of a war, but if done correctly, it could crush the extremists in Pakistan and at the same time pull us out of our recession.

Gl? M8 we'd have the backup of China and India.

Imagine that for a coalition of the willing. Infact, fuck central Asia. The west should cut a deal with India, China, Russia, France, Iran and anybody else who wants in on carving up all those 'stan' states and just doing wtf we want with them.

Now that the 'War on Terror' has shifted to Afghanistan, now what?
nice collection, some great images.

The one with the kids, the kid in the foreground, wow. What a look on his face...he looks destined to be a hard case

What now..I guess I hope they could try to keep beating the militants back, maybe use some of the thought that 'worked' in Iraq, mainly getting the tribes on your side, by showing that you could increase security in areas you stay active in, and also don't be afraid to offer some financial incentives to a few people along the way. Hearts and minds  and wallets?/

Gen Petraeus seems to be a smart man, he is Centcom head now

at risk of being obvious here but..My impression is that this is going to be different than Iraq,  there are parts of Afghan that will never, ever be "pacified" let alone any idea about being democratized or modernized.

@ invading Pakistan comment, I hope you were kidding, that is an appalling idea...however, I can possibly see what you are getting at

I was looking around at other photos of Afghanistan, and saw these from Kabul:

I know Kabul was nearly destroyed in the early 90's civil war, and then it can't have helped that we probably bombed it more later, but it seems from those recent photos that it's showing some signs of life.
