Herein lies the problem with decriminalization + taxing, you need to hope that people will be lazy enough to buy from you instead of growing it themselves, but that's a problem if they already do so. You'd need to have even worse penalties from growing/distribution in decriminalized land than you have now in order to push some of the growers out of the market so that people will actually buy it legal and pay the taxes.
They seem not to have that problem in Holland.
Pretty sure they don't have a tax on it like tobacco or alcohol in the Netherlands.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

The underground tobacco market is pretty commonplace where I live.

There are a couple of people in my local who 'smuggle' tobacco in from mainland Europe and sell it on for a profit, still undercutting the price of shop-bought tobacco in the UK.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

I think the govt would probably only allow "non hydro" pot, as the hydro pot  is possibly too powerful. This would mean that a user would still need to go underground for his "hydro" hit.
I dont think that a pot user would stop using pot if the tax went up. A mate of mine owned a small shop for a while, and he made thousands of dollars a week from cigarettes. People didnt even look at the price, they just reach into their wallets and feed their addiction.

From what I just googled, yearly tax revenues for cannabis are at over $ 600 million.

the reason there isnt underground markets for alcohol is bc you can buy your own beer/wine kits. if pot was legalized, then i am assuming people would grow their own, but it would be illegal to sell it.

Make it legal and I doubt very many people would sell it below market price because they'd make less of a profit and risk too much. Obv it would happen but I doubt they'd sell much since most people like to stay on the ride side of the law.

because it's a bitch to process. The cheapest way to smoke is to roll em yourself, i.e. buy the treated baccy, and roll it into smokes.

It depends on the ease of procurement , price and quality.  As is now in California there are clinics all over the place and the pot is at least as good (and better in most cases) than what's out on the street.  Plus the price is comparable ($60 per 1/8 oz. at the clinic, ~$50 per 1/8th oz on "the streets"), so there really is no reason not to go to the clinics.  Plus they will manicure it for you and let you mix and match variaties.

The OP did make me wonder if pot ever does become federally legal if the focus would then turn to illegal growers/distributors as opposed to the consumer/user as it is now.

I don't know anyone who grows their own weed in Holland, or buys it off a random guy. Buying in a store is a hell of a lot easier.

Well that's a bit of the problem.. If they legilize it, they'd tax it, it already has a market place in the black market. So basically the government would have to compete and make it real cheap to put the compition out of business and then start taxing it..

They couldn't just make it legal and expensive, they'd have to basically make sure it's better and cheaper..

Most people here don't really have the space to grow it. Housing is a lot more expensive, and hot lamps and that sort of stuff aren't cheap. One of my friends was planning on trying it, but I don't think he ever got around to it.

I have a descent sized yard and great climate. Dorito sales in suburban America would sky rocket. Maybe they can start a junk food tax.

Actually i do know what you're talking about, i worked for 3 years at a Garden Centre, and up at their Fruit Farm.

It was suuuucccch a hard job having to put together punnets of strawberries, many unfortunately ended up in my mouth.

Yeah, I assume the weather in Florida would be great for growing without any extra equipment. Might not be such a good example for the kids though.

Well the risk better equal the reward.. When growning a drug like pot, you really need to grow a lot to actually turn a profit. Growing a lot to actually turn a profit would be costly, I think.

So...people want to legalize pot.  fine.  but, here is a question.  if pot were set at whatever price, and then the govt kept increasing the tax on it...would you continue to but it legally?  or buy it underground?  the reason i ask is because booze and tobacco have seen many increases, yet there is no real underground for it.  (moonshine yes but that is not a nationwide market.)
It's about quality, that's why. There are many, many respective brands out there for booze and tobacco that are much better than some underground stuff. Not saying that there isn't some good underground stuff out there, there always is, but in terms of availability...

It would probably take awhile for some known brands to come up in the weed market, but after awhile I'd say yeah most people would just buy it from the store. Why bother going through all that annoying shady shit when you can just go to a store, buy it and walk out no questions asked (except maybe ID)

It all depends on the quality and the ease of buying it.
