Army specialist Terry Holdbrooks had been a guard at Guantánamo for about six months the night he had his life-altering conversation with detainee 590, a Moroccan also known as "the General." This was early 2004, about halfway through Holdbrooks's stint at Guantánamo with the 463rd Military Police Company. Until then, he'd spent most of his day shifts just doing his duty. He'd escort prisoners to interrogations or walk up and down the cellblock making sure they weren't passing notes. But the midnight shifts were slow. "The only thing you really had to do was mop the center floor," he says. So Holdbrooks began spending part of the night sitting cross-legged on the ground, talking to detainees through the metal mesh of their cell doors.

He developed a strong relationship with the General, whose real name is Ahmed Errachidi. Their late-night conversations led Holdbrooks to be more skeptical about the prison, he says, and made him think harder about his own life. Soon, Holdbrooks was ordering books on Arabic and Islam. During an evening talk with Errachidi in early 2004, the conversation turned to the shahada, the one-line statement of faith that marks the single requirement for converting to Islam ("There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet"). Holdbrooks pushed a pen and an index card through the mesh, and asked Errachidi to write out the shahada in English and transliterated Arabic. He then uttered the words aloud and, there on the floor of Guantánamo's Camp Delta, became a Muslim.

I don't think it is a bad thing unless he converted to the radical beliefs of teh evil terizts!!! Freedom of religion. Islam is not the truth, Christianity is. [rhyme]Oh well, he's goin' to hell. [/rhyme]

That's the beauty of being in a military with no ('official') religion. But where's the spark of debate?

US military has plenty of Islamic servicemen and women. Don't see what the big deal is.

^this

Although some will try to make the circumstances seem interesting/ironic because they have the misguided view that those detainees are there simply because they are Muslim.

Actually to be a Christian you pretty much have to take the literal interpretation of everything mentioned in that picture.

^^^^ Christ would have so fucked Mohammad up in a fair fight.  I mean look at him, he looks like Charlie Sheen in platoon.  Mohammad would have been fucked up.

Hell, even Mosses would have knocked out Mohammad, but from what I read Mohammad got better tang than both the others put together.

WTF

The question I've in mind is what the hell is an MP (guard) doing having conversations with detainees?

NOT supposed to be having conversations with the detainees without the blessing and supervision of the Intel Supervisor, lead interrogator, or someone in charge.

Why?

Apparently water boarding and various other torture methods were done without superiors knowing about it...

6 months or so. Spent a few years reading about Christianity. Haven't memorised various parts of the Gospel but I have a fair gist of what the Old and New Testaments were about.

A lot of good messages in that book. Used to own a pretty kickass Bible actually. New Literal Translation with a lot of annotations, extra notes, expanded explanations about possible interpretations of a passage, historical trivia about the various areas and such added. Pity it went missing last time I moved (was moving about a lot last year, changed residences about 5 times ).

Why do you not let bored mouth-breathing MPs play with the detainees?
Two words.
Abu Ghraib.

Or, something as simple and harmless as a detainee asking the guard "Hey, is Ackmed Abu Muhammed doing okay here?" might have more implications than the guard knows.
Perhaps the interrogators are purposely letting the detainee think his buddy is missing, at large, dead, or something else.  Uninformed guard, not knowing what he should and shouldn't say, can accidentally wreck any chance the interrogators have of getting useful information.

The guards are there to guard.
Not chit-chat.
Not make friends.
Not answer questions.
