I sort of remember a similar thread, but for me it's Home Depot.

They whore out contracting with big budget advertising farming service, sell nothing but Chinese made junk and have too many locations killing small ma and pa hardware stores.

A Sunday edition of the New York Times cost more than a share of its stock. http://adage.com/adages/post?article_id=134620

Another contractor:

Blackwater.

But seriously most companies (even the ones you don't like) are useful in that they increase competition of the sellers.

First, blackwater has changed their name.

Second, the area that they catch so much crap for (the securtiy personnel in Iraq) is actually a small part of what they do.  But nobody cares about anything like that, as long as they have a juicy media story and an ominous sounding name, right?

Oh, does California count as a company?  Maybe that will shock some politicians (on BOTH sides) into a bit of fiscal responsibility.

I'm not against just the media shit, Mercs for hire all over the world is a really bad concept imo and should be outlawed. But whatever.

...but it is the second oldest profession!  And what actually qualifies as a mercinary these days?  If you hire a security guard, and you pay him... and he leaves if you don't pay him, is he a mercenary?  Or does he have to carry a gun?  Does he have to go to another country?  If the federal goverment pays them, are they mercenaries, or just 'irregular' troops? Does it matter who their money is coming from?

..and my media comment is mostly a general comment.  If it does not pertain to you, don't sweat it, or a 'mia culpa' for making it seem I was attacking you personally.

EDIT: Oh, and what about the Swiss Guard?  You know, the mercs who protect the Vatican?

See private armies looking to go where the dollar signs are is what I consider mercs. Private armies run under the guise of a corporate logo, paid for to fight with or against local militia, is what I could consider mercs.

If in your mind that includes the vatican then good for you. Please try to keep away from any shiny objects, they may distract you.

Ummm, the Swiss Guard started life as a mercenary unit, hired by the Vatican to guard it.  There was a huge uproar at the time by not using an Italian mecenary group, but the Vatican wanted a unit of foreigners, to maintain its loyalty, and try to prevent any loyalty to local establishments that may corrupt its security force.

Through history, mercenary units have been used.  Whether for missions that were 'unseemly,' or ones that would look better the fewer official soldiers died, or even as a low cost measure, since you would not have to pay them during peacetime, mecs have always been around.  The 'second-oldest-profession' bit was not a joke.

For that matter, how would you classify the entire French Foreigh Legion?  As long as someone takes money to fight (and that includes the ENTIRE armed forces from EVERY nation- well, all the volunteers, anyway), there can be an arguement about them being mercenary.  Mercs got a bad rap through the ages, about being unprofessional, switching sides for a bit more money, and for being unethical.  They have been getting a beating in the press and in entertainment, all the way back to Machiavelli.  Most of it unearned.

lol I'm sure when you get the know them they are really nice guys too. The Swiss Guard hasn't left the Vatican to go fight anywhere lately. Neither has the french foreign legion, irrc the last action they saw was Gulf War I.

Mercs in this day are vastly different from the formation of the vatican security personal that are for show more than anything these days. And the French foreign legion doesn't act independently of France.

Not lately.  Not except for that time they were sold to Spain to fight against Mexican forces fighting for indipendance.  Or that time they actually fought against France when Alberta tried to rebel from the French.  But not anytime lately, you are right.

My issue is that lots of people toss around the tag 'Mercenary' without understanding its meaning or history.  But that happens with a lot of words nowadays.  The ignorant perpetuate language into the minds of the masses (books, movies, tv shows, politicians, media), and the public uses it, never knowing how wrong they are.  Or caring, usually.  It is most often encountered in the more martial subjects, since most of those who create the books, movies, tv shows, etc... couldn't be bothered to actually learn something from such an unsavory field of study.
