Battlefield Community Event @ GamesCom 2009
Gordon Van Dyke posted a new entry on the Battlefield blog talking about his trip to Gamescom and his experience with meeting the German Battlefield community.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This year I was lucky enough to attend GamesCom 2009 in Cologne (Köln), Germany for Battlefield Bad Company 2 hot off the heels of our Battlefield 1943 release. During the event I had a very special opportunity to sit and talk with some German Battlefield Community members about BFBC2, BF1943, and our future Battlefield. And this was all possible and organized by our awesome German Battlefield Community Manager Christoph Edelmann who did an amazing job.
The Community event lasted over a span of 4 days in a private area just for them that included Hand-on access to Battlefield Bad Company 2, Q&A with DICE, and an off-site Dinner and Cocktails with DICE. It seemed they all enjoyed themselves and for me was very rewarding and can’t express how much I enjoyed meeting such amazing group of people all with a common bond “the love Battlefield”. Thanks again to all of you who attended. You represented the Battlefield community with honor and pride you deserve!
Below is a group photo of Gordon & Christoph with the German BF Community and a picture some of the guys drew since they couldn’t take pictures of the game… love it! :-)

Hey HaiBai, keep updating! BC2 so far looks really great! I hope I get the chance to play the beta though. Can't wait to play the new modes, should be really fun teamwork. I wonder if DICE will show anything new at PAX.

That trailer is still one of the best game trailers I've ever seen. Hoping to see some of the SP campaign soon, the vids for that on BFBC were usually pretty funny.

PAX 09: Bad Company 2 Hands-On - IGN
IGN posted a short preview of Bad Company 2 at the Penny Arcade Expo going on now in Seattle.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At the Battlefield-only booth set up by Electronic Arts on the show floor, dozens upon dozens of gamers eagerly lined up to split into two squads and challenge each other to bloody combat at an Alaskan pipeline facility. The impetus for the battle was unclear, but what required zero explanation was the need to get in there and blast the enemy squad until the snows ran red with blood. Before jumping into a spawn, you choose your class, such as assault or recon, which have customizable loadouts. I had a sense that snipers are either extremely powerful or that this Alaskan map was just really suited for them because moving into the open without an eye for your next piece of cover is an invitation for an extra hole in your head.
The amount of real estate to cover in this demo inspired mad rushes for vehicles, such as tanks and ATVs. The ATVs are zippy as all get-out. You can cruise off the road and race between trees to advance on enemy positions, closing the gap between you and trouble much faster than, say, a tank. That said, there really is nothing like rumbling a tank into a battle, swiveling that turret toward a damaged oil tank that a sniper is using as a vantage point, and delivering the fatal shell. Read the rest...

We held a tournament on Sunday where squads put their skills to the test and came away with trophies and copies of Battlefield 1943. For those who couldn't get into our booth, we were handing out t-shirts with a special bonus.
The FanKit is coming soon, so please check back later for a link to the download!

PAX 2009: Bad Company 2 Briefing Video & Write-up
Another PAX video coming out today with producer Gordon Van Dyke explaining game modes, kits, objectives and more.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A user on the EA UK forums, mclaren777 posted a write-up of his experience with BC2 and talking with the developers.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Some backstory first. I love BC1 and I still play it regularly. It's my favorite FPS of all time and, in my opinion, one of the best games of this current generation. I also downloaded BF1943 at launch and have enjoyed it greatly, though not as much as BC1.
Anyway, I was able to play four matches at PAX and I even impressed the guys from DICE enough that they gave me a free download code for BF1943. But the real highlight of my time there was the 10-15 minutes I spent talking with Gordon Van Dyke, the game's producer. He's one of those rare developers who seemingly can't sugar-coat things. He talks straight from the heart without any corporate lala or PR-speak.
We talked about a number of topics but one thing stood out more than anything else: DICE doesn't have some master plan, apart from making the game fun. Read the Rest..

Assault is gonna be the ammoman class? Talk about grenade launcher spamming.
The irony of guns, is that they can save lives.

Interview with Former DICE General Manager
GameIndustry.biz sat down with former DICE general manager, Sean Decker. The interview talks about his transition from DICE to EA Los Angeles and how the PC gaming platform is changing among other topics.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Q: How's business at EALA?
Sean Decker: It's good, very good - we have a lot of people working on a lot of great stuff, obviously Command & Conquer is what we're showing here [at Gamescom]. I've been at the studio all of four months now - I was the general manager at DICE, so I'm kind of figuring it out.
They've made great Command & Conquer games year after year, so for me I'm coming in half-way through a game, seeing where things are, which is fantastic.
Q: So why the move from DICE - was that something you wanted to do, or did the company suggest you'd be good in LA?
Sean Decker: It's pretty much both - my family's from the US and we lived in Sweden for six years. It was a long time, but the other thing is that my original role at EA was with Westwood, so Command & Conquer was the first franchise I'd ever worked on. Obviously I did shooters at DICE, and there are some other games there that fit with EALA's portfolio. Read the rest...

BF Blog: Customized Battlefield Vehicle Combat
Bad Company 2 Gameplay Designer, Alan ‘Demize99’ Kertz posted an article on the BF Blog about the customization of vehicles in the game.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With Battlefield’s rich vehicle pedigree we simply weren’t satisfied with just providing new rides in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. We took our existing rides back to the mechanics for tuning and expanded Vehicle Combat even further by adding customization and new gameplay features.
For the first time in Battlefield history we’re adding customization to the Battlefield Vehicle Combat. In Bad Company 2 players can earn customizable vehicle upgrades that let them tune a vehicle towards their own play style. Vehicle Specializations allow players chose between Enhanced Armor, an Upgraded Weapon package, Smoke Grenades to hide, an Electronic Warfare package to locate nearby enemies, or an Optics Upgrade to zoom in on targets. These upgrades can give a vulnerable tanker the means to escape, defeat, or outlive his opponents. Finding the right Vehicle Specialization to fit each play style is crucial to success in Vehicle Combat. Read the rest...

I was just reading that Customized Vehicle Combat thing. It sounds weird. Not sure if I like it or not. It sounds like it'll mean you'll end up going into firefights you can't win because you had the wrong upgrade.
Oh well. I won't judge until i've tried it.
