Now, I would appreciate some honesty here, and do not let the fact that I posted this thread skew your opinion because of how you feel about my posts..

Basically, how does the world view Americans, even stereotypically. I think Americans are as described, generally speaking. I have lived in 3 different countries and I, for the most part, have formed my opinion based on this. It was very noticable after my return from Iraq. What people in America complain about can be pretty shallow.

Your honest opinions?

There are a whole lot of idiots in the US, but there are just as many idiots everywhere else. The US is big enough even for niches to get a whole lot of global attention, and the negative ones are what people remember. I've been to dozens of different countries, and after Italy, the Southeastern US has been the place I've enjoyed the most, and where the people have been the most consistently nice.

I'd say at an incredibly generalising level that they are ignorant, they believe they are entitled to far too much, they have a serious superiority complex, they are so quick to leap at anyone who they believe is criticising them or their way of life, they are fake, and they are intolerant.

I could write a similar list for every other culture and civilisation.

Please remember I am not speaking of all of Americans, I am speaking of the general accepted attitude toward Americans IN GENERAL.

When it comes to politics, alot of Americans are extremely stubborn and very partisan (unlike people from the UK), like this forum, I'd say Turquoise is one of the few Americans here that is somewhat rational and tries to see things properly. Most other times debates degenerate into liberal/conservative bashing (and their respective parties) and all round stupid childish behaviour. (someone said this same thing in another topic just recently)

I'm sure you could say things about Brits but most of the time we just get lumped into a "Silly Euros" category. It's weird how or why Americans do that. No, the EU is not like the US. Travelling from Ireland to fucking.....Slovenia or whatever, is much different than going from NYC to LA...if you get what I'm trying to say here. Is that people in the EU aren't the same all over at all, no way near at all, and it's nothing like how homogeneous (relatively speaking) the population of the USA is.

I could say the same thing about us french canadians.  (Sometimes I have the impression we make it on purpose to look stupid in front of the world)
In my 20+ years of working I had the chance to meet a lot of americans.  Overall good people, I beleive it's all about perceptions.

You know like a crowd is as intelligent than the most idiot one.  The few americans that are making you look this way are minority in count but higher in visual profile.

Being the center of the world is probably the feeling that gets to me above the others.

To a certain degree and generally speaking all humanity is spoiled, gluttonous and arrogant. Why focus on Americans, Ive been around enough to know that, people generally help themselves before others no matter where they are from.

The stereotypical American is. And that's why I hate Americans, they make foreigners assume I'm automatically like that.

Stereotypes have a basis in fact.  I think the past 8 years has given the world much more negative stereotype of Americans, though things seem to be looking better.

I personally like US citizens (most of them), they are friendly & welcoming but they stick up for a way of life that is stuck in the 50's. the American way rar rar quite frankly is bankrupt, I also think that with the world wide credit crunch US citizens have now relised how corrupt the world system is & it has left them in shock where as us Euro fags are a more cynical bunch & we want you to be more like us i guess.

I voted yes - that is the so called 'Stereotypical American' as seen by the so called 'Stereotypical Brit' - so, yep, 'fraid so - in fact, I would say it's probably pretty safe to assume that the majority of the world views 'America', and therefore 'Americans' as "spoiled, gluttonous, arrogant".

But, of course, that is not the same as saying all Americans are "spoiled, gluttonous, arrogant".

America is a young country going through its imperialistic phase. Just as we Brits and most of Europe did. Hell, look at the history of pretty much any of the, say, top 10 developed nations and you'll see they all went through at least one imperialistic phase.

And they were all "spoiled, gluttonous, arrogant".

And then they fall.

Harsh characterizations for an entire nation. Yet, a comparatively high standard of living will have that effect at some point - for a percentage of the people. Nothing to be ashamed of I guess. Besides, having made the observation automatically sets you apart from those that might be caught up in this.

I should also say:

Which has actually also been my experience of RL Americans.

(i.e. like all stereotypes, it's not really all that true, of the individuals that make up a country, no matter how accurate a description it may or may not be of the country as a whole - the 'whole' (population) is more than the sum of it's 'parts' (individuals))

My RL experience of Americans is that they are too damn friendly, sometimes sickeningly so. It pisses me off. But then, I am a Londoner.....

Yes, the stereotypical American is an arrogant, spoiled glutton, who thinks he's entitled to everything. Many have proved this wrong, but sadly, a large number of people I have met fall into this category.

American tourists are generally overly friendly, if not obnoxious, who don't take local etiquette into consideration, but make up for it with handsome tips and the aforementioned kindness.

I like many Americans I meet. They do not always take to my sarcastic humour (they are much more politically correct than I), but share my interests in upcoming technologies and TV culture
