Watching the last yahtzee reviews opened my eye up to something that ive never noticed, but has always subliminally annoyed the fuck out of me.

Why is it that EVERY sngle game that has come out in the last 2 years been coloured in the 'dirt spectrum'.

In all fairness, every enviroment has been done to death as it is.  Far Cry 2 was "tasteful" in my opinion, its enviroments were pretty intresting.  The rest...well...well, that takes times /johnhenry

Its very overused but you want pink, bright green, yellow and purple in a world where humans are dead and monsters are trying slaughter you?
You should use your brain more instead of just writing down something that someone else already said.

Don't think Far Cry 2 is too brown tbh ... the colors are just plain perfect in that game on the PS3+plasma combination

TF2 is actually rather clean from the rest. Just a little dust on the walls but otherwise they pretty much use normal colours.

Far Cry 2 goes overboard imo. Good thing thou that the game premium crap.

I wouldn't call Far Cry 2 or TF2 dark but the others I agree with

It means less work for the visual team.

You can do a hell of a lot less detail and work if you just wash over everything with a muddy paintbrush. It also makes fps much smoother.

If you don't mud colour everything when you use fog it looks out of place and is annoying. Bf2 does this for example.

Not all. A lot sure, but there are exceptions. I'd also argue about TF2. Sure a lot of the maps are brown, but there's still a hell of a lot of primary colours floating around.

It's all down to the 'atmosphere' you want or is popular - gritty sells, so you see a lot of gritty games - but some, always take a different approach - and when they get it right they're massive - it's always been like that and always will - just look at movies - and books - they're all the same - 'gritty'=big assured profits - 'arthouse'=big risk but big payout if you get it right.

Aside from mood-setting, the truth is that it's easier to make a brown game than to force a system to render miles and miles of luscious vegetation...or model those. As systems and environment modeling applications improve, I'm sure you'll see things balance out, but short of Battlefield Vietnam 2 (green and brown!), I think you're going to see brown, brown and more brown. Also, see Yoda's post.

Also,

1) Not really. There's plenty of variety out there, and enough preview material available to keep you away from games with unpleasant color schemes.
2) I think the dank blues and greens of Bioshock were even more depressing than the rust.

I recommend Mirror's Edge, if you want fresh colors.

But vegetation, luscious or otherwise, just adds greens to the browns.

It's not about modelling detail, it's about colour palette, and it takes no more rendering power to render greens, reds, blues, yellows and pinks, than it does to render browns.

Wouldn't matter.  If all these games had jungles or took place in the artic, etc everyone would cry over that.  And while Far Cry 2 is slapped with the brown label, it does have some pretty impressive foilage, especially when on fire

@scorp

First, if you want something to look like an Earthly environment, you need brown...even if you're sick of looking at it in reality. Second, you're right about the processing power, but those greens are usually going on plants, which require way more power to render than a rock or a lumpy mound of dirt. And since there's going to be a lot of them...well, fill in the figures. That's outdoor terrain. For less-realistic environmental colors, go for the cartoony games like Mario.

Also, Zoo is right. Everything's 'overdone' and you can't please everyone. Me, I like the nighttime dankness of Thief II.

Right, GTA IV definitely had to look like it did. That was "good" art direction.
