unlike the money making machine that is the usual university textbook author (Stewart comes to mind..).
Seriously, it seems every undergrad economics textbook releases a new edition around July each year, adding little but a new cover. Charity/used book shops around here are stacked to the roof with previous (basically identical) editions.. 'tis ridiculous.

Not surprising then that one of the textbooks a professor showed me had a table of average graduate incomes in the introductory "why study economics" chapter.. lol, what a mess.

my gf's dad is like the head of the european chiropractic association or something, and he has also published (and revised, three times) the definitive chiropractice textbook that all of the university departments and private schools use. like, he has total monopoly on it (it even has full-colour photo instructions of him and her mum [who is also a chiroprac] performing the exercises). he makes so much from student royalties every year that my gf now safely has a $250k first house set up. academic textbook writing is good business. it's not just business-types (though i imagine they do make way more). most of my professors here have 'definitive' or 'authoritative' books out on so-and-so topic and so-and-so author... which are, of course, part of the required reading list for our undergraduate curricula... and are at least stocked in every major university library. furthermore literature professors get a lot of gigs writing the 'critical introductions' to classics, or just editing essay collections about said-classics. there's a lot of way to make a whole lotta money on top of your generous academic salary. another benefit to the career!

I have 4+ versions of Halliday's Fundamentals of Physics on my bookshelf.
3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th if I recall correctly.
I may still have a 1st or 2nd edition around somewhere...

In all reality, the 3rd edition was really the last edition that was really warranted.
Many typos and formatting oddities in 1st and 2nd editions.

For a calculus treatment of undergraduate physics, nothing about the "Fundamentals" of physics has changed enough to warrant a new edition every year.
Spivak's rate of a new edition every 10-20 years is about right, just to keep current with modern typesetting conventions and technology (Ti-89 versus sliderule, Maple versus Mathematica, etc)

i don't like dorian grey or wilde, either... but your criticisms are a bit dumb. what were you expecting? concrete simple sentences?
I didn't know what I was expecting. I got it because I'd heard the name and it was free. Didn't know anything about it.
Turns out I don't like the aestheticist movement. Learn something every day.

As far as "classics" go, I'd rate Moby Dick as my favourite.

it's ironic because every time jay tries to seem actually smart and intellectual by namedropping books or reading amazon popular history, he just looks like a fucking mong. so he has to be insincere all the time. i guess that's what happens when you get called out continuously for faux-intellectualism, over and over, for years on repeat.

So to bring back some life into this thread..what is everyone currently reading? I just started this yesterday
https://img2.imagesbn.com/images/136800000/136802034.JPG
About a 100 pages into this 1000 pager. So I have a bit to go. It is going pretty quickly though. For a book aimed at serious historians it flows well. I picked this one up since it is a spot of history I'm not too familiar with in an otherwise well understood period.

So yeah, your turn.

Middle of exam times, so not had time to read anything for fun, but lying ready on my desk is Meiksins Wood's 'Liberty and Property', and Rushdie's Midnight's Children.. Will probably end up reading those two after exams.

On a separate note, I'm going to Washington for three weeks in June for some seminars on US politics and foreign policy, and was wondering if anyone knows of any books that are good, quick introductions to the political system (e.g. power structures, elections, traditional stances on specific issues, etc)?

I've been looking at this: http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=344656 , but I'm not sure I can be bothered to read through an entire text book before going there.. Something less textbooky would be nice.

That said, the description gives a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for: "This new text, written by a team of leading authorities, assesses the state of American politics in the Obama administration. It looks both at the institutional framework of government and at the policy dilemmas facing the United States today and it analyzes the major controversial issues that shape American political debates in the 21st century."

See how fast you read and comprehend stuff compared to the average human. Also how quick you can read some classic books if you kept that pace.
