Happy Birthday to Horus.. also born to a virgin mother, and was baptized in a river by Anup. He also healed the sick/the blind, walked on water, had twelve disciples, and was executed. It was announced 3 days later that he had risen (By 2 women).

Happy birthday to Mithra and Dionysus too.

I always loved Horus. I like the one with the dogs head too. On a more serious note, man's mythology has been grafted onto the previous dominant cultures mythology since time immemorial - which I think is what you're getting at.

The same story was going around the Mediterranean for at least a thousand years before Jesus. I think it's widely accepted by most Christians that Jesus was not born on 12/25. There is absolutely no evidence, historical or biblical, to suggest that. The date was picked around A.D. 440. European solar calendars at the time placed that date as the winter solstice.

Krishna was also a carpenter .

That whole winter solstice birthday, rising from the dead, the 12 apostles, bla bla was pretty well explained in Zeitgeist, as an astronomical thing.

The old testament described a series of criteria that the messiah would have to meet. Horus may have done those things, but it wasn't enough. If you believe that sort of thing.

While I was sort of strugling with my faith, after I saw zeitgeist it was kind of a done deal for me.  However, upon looking into it, am not so sure about peter joeseph (zeitgeist guy), and achyra S (probably butchered that) sources.  I do, have to contest, horus:

In ancient Egypt there were originally several gods known by the name Horus, but the best known and most important from the beginning of the historic period was the son of Osiris and Isis who was identified with the king of Egypt.

One ancient Egyptian relief depicts this conception by showing his mother Isis in a falcon form, hovering over an erect phallus of a dead and prone Osiris in the Underworld (EOR, s.v. "Phallus")

The description of Horus's conception goes as follows:

wrote:

"But after she [i.e., Isis] had brought it [i.e. Osiris' body] back to Egypt, Seth managed to get hold of Osiris's body again and cut it up into fourteen parts, which she scattered all over Egypt. Then Isis went out to search for Osiris a second time and buried each part where she found it (hence the many tombs of Osiris tht exist in Egypt). The only part that she did not find was the god's penis, for Seth had thrown it into the river, where it had been eaten by a fish; Isis therefore fashioned a substitute penis to put in its place. She had also had sexual intercourse with Osisis after his death, which resulted in the conception and birth of his posthumous son, Harpocrates, Horus-the-child. Osiris became king of the netherworld, and Horus proceeded to fight with Seth....
I was looking for that image but cant seem to come across it.  Still, I really cant see where this idea Horus is a virgin birth comes from, if she humped a dead guy (maybe cause its a fake penis?).

You can get all this stuff in'' Encyclopedia of Religion'' btw if you want to check up on me.  Perhaps am missing something glaringly obvious, so if there is, let me know so am not wasting my time

I have some stuff about the dying and rising Gods.  Am going to go have a look for it now, since I have nothing else to do :\

Yes Bell, the historical similarities are not the doings of the corrupt Catholic church, they are a poor misuse of sources by two film-makers. Lulz.

Kmarion hurry up and include the rest of the deities listed in Zeitgeist with the shared characteristics, this thread is losing some of the dramatic shazam!

I dont think murdoch (or achyra-something or other S) is a film maker.  I believe her work is what Joesph sourced his intro to zeitgeist from though.

... Wasn't really my point.

Debunk the Horus-birth tale all you want, accuse the sources of the film of being unreliable or whatever else... it's all diverting attention away from the fact that the Judo-Christian religion is built on massive amounts of bullshit and stolen lore. You can systematically work through the list of dozens (if not hundreds) of deities mentioned in films like Zeitgeist, or you could remove the wool from ones eyes and just actually look at the historical facts for what they are.

Btw, DID YUO KNOW THAT MOST OF THEM ALSO HAD CHARACTERS WITH NAMES SIMILAR TO MOSES IN THEIR MYTHOLOGY?!"?"?"?!?!

Zeitgeist a long time ago. Religilous last night. The timing of this thread has much to do with today's date.

With all these virgin births it seems like abstinence only works 99.9999% of the time.

lol, It was these Middle Eastern "pagan" religions which formed the base of Judaism (which is why you have so many similar stories and shit), which then went onto form Christianity/Islam. Christianity then went and incorporated a few European "pagan" religious elements into it, mainly so that it would be easier to Christianise Europe, and then Islam did a similar thing too with the Arab peninsula religions etc..

Except Mithra was from the Persian/Zoroastrian god also called the same thing which is also similar to a Indian god called Mitra which in turn goes way back to a single god or something.

It's all linked like a motherfucker these things.
