The real distinction isn't easy to make:
a hatchback has a slanted rear door, with non-rectangular back side windows.
a wagon has a more or less vertical rear door, with approximately rectangular back side windows.
Moreover, the full height of the car extends to the very back in a wagon. It doesn't in a hatchback
example:
Ford Focus WAGON
and HATCHBACK
Thus, the Mazda Protege5 in question is a hatchback.
Addendum: one tricky case is the Audi A3. While Audi calls it an "estate" in Europe and a "wagon" in NA, it's actually a hatch--which is what most reputable motoring mags have called it.
