SAN FRANCISCO – Some same-sex marriage supporters are urging people to "call in gay" Wednesday to show how much the country relies on gays and lesbians, but others question whether it's wise to encourage skipping work given the nation's economic distress. Organizers of "Day Without a Gay" — scheduled to coincide with International Human Rights Day and modeled after similar work stoppages by Latino immigrants — also are encouraging people to perform volunteer work and refrain from spending money.

Will this accomplish anything? If so what?

easier for bosses to know who to let go of in a time of layoffs.

just when people were starting to support gay rights, they are going to do something with the potential to hurt joe the plumber's wallet.  NOT a bright idea.  marches and stuff like that are a thing of the past.  if gays want equal rights, they need to pursue ideas generating grassroots support for their beliefs.
/gay fail

unless you go to a ...soup kitchen (or some other place that attracts volunteers).
i don't get that. how is it 'a day without a gay'? it should be 'a day with a gay volunteer'

I'm really not bothered by homosexuality at all.  It's just the attention seeking "look at me...look at me" types which prove to be an annoyance, and this 'Day Without a Gay' smacks of that.

Then I am going to "call in straight" on 12-11.  You know, in the interest of fairness.

yeah, it's a shame Wisconsin doesn't allow straights to get married or even have civil unions with benefits like marriage

I don't think it will accomplish much and it isn't needed (imo).  Most of society has accepted gays as equal members.  Gay people should be looking to change the opinion of pretty much the only people that still think they are lepers - religious fundies.  Is it a smart idea?  I don't think so, but then again I don't like sticking my dick in another man either.

Whatever, let them protest.  It affects me in no way.

This is going to blow up in their faces... This reeks of in-your-face gays, who are just dying to express their uniqueness and whatnot. If you're going to do a protest against something that infringes on your rights, when you're a minority, the goal should NOT be to piss the guys who did that off! It should be to show that you are perfectly capable of being normal, and living normal lives, and fitting into society. Who wants to support a group that won't integrate?

I think they overestimate their numbers, they don't have the same massive impact that Hispanic immigrants do, their mid level jobs are less noticeable to the average person than the low wage workers.

This is true. AFAIK, the construction workers a few houses down are certainly hispanic but are probably not gay.

I have a friend who just moved to San Fran - he's normal (aka not politically overactive or has a non-mainstream life aka boring).

He says he's like in the minority there....

He doesn't march or wear his cause on his sleeve.

I talked to him the other day - he asked an environmental protestor to stop swearing in front of his kid.  He got yelled at.

I'm wondering how many people are going to get fired tomorrow because of this.  Based on the employment concerns lately...it's probably best not to give cause.

I'm also wondering about some places where maybe a whole department is out on gay leave, and the rest of the employees need to take up the slack.  That might work in reverse - where everyone hates hates hates.

Either way, I could care less.
