It is the 67th anniversary of the surprise Japanese attack on the US Naval base.

My Grandfather was on the USS West Virginia as part of the Marine Detachment and was on duty on the quarter deck in his dress blues at 7:48am when the first bombs hit. He stood his post until a Navy Ensign told him to abandon ship. He jumped over into the bay and had to drag that Ensign to shore. During the swim, he lost his wedding ring and it is still on the bottom to this day. My Grandmother didn't learn that he was alive for over a week because of the blackout that was imposed. During that time he and the surviving Marines were used to clean up the bodies that were still washing up.

So, when you wake up today to watch football or do whatever, take a minute to remember the 2,345 Service Men and 57 Civilians that died and launched us into WWII.

Fixed

The US backed Japan into a corner - it was inevitable there would be an attack somehwere, which is why you had a fleet in Pearl in the first place.
The only surprise was when and where, except that wasn't really a surprise as the plan had been decoded - the memo just didn't quite get to the right guy in Pearl until too late.
That and the Japanese never even intended it to be a surprise attack, they just didn't type their declaration of war fast enough.

A raid can refer to either a military tactic, or a larger Grand Tactical or Operational warfare mission which require the execution of a plan where surprise is the principal desired outcome of the attack.

I think that classifies as a surprise attack, considering the forces located at Pearl were not at battle stations, they were on shore or in their bunks.

The US wanted a war with Japan, they were expecting an attack, they were told an attack was on its way, they saw it coming on radar.
If they weren't at battle stations thats their problem really.
