USB powered external HDDs still have moving parts so like Uzique said, vibration and drops are still an issue.

Mind you, I use an esata, external powered HDD for my school program and it's taken loads of punishment travelling too and from campus.

true. don't they make those "rugged" HDDs though? the kind that you can kick and drop and smash with a hammer (well maybe not that) and they still work?

If it's got moving parts, it's gonna break if it's dropped enough. The only drives that are "shock proof" are SSDs or USB flash drives.

I accidently set my other one on fire last night so I got a new one today.
i'm gonna get a new external HD soon actually, not for porn though.... i get nervous once a year about my precarious music collection, which seems to stretch itself over several hard-drives like some metastatizing cancer. i normally buy a 1tb drive just to try and contain it all in one big back-up. which one did you get? i hate spending lots of money on external drives cause they fail on me so damn often.

sigh.

Point being, they all went out of vogue for one reason or another, then came back in for one reason or another. They all stayed popular amongst a small (niche) group for specific reasons, then became popular to a broader audience after falling out of popularity.

No need to go into a treatise on the topic, ffs.

Clearly they skipped math when putting you through that grueling literary arts degree, Uzique.

no i'm just clearly not attempting to do math when posting offhand comments on a forum, feos. maybe some of that logic and common sense you keep harping on about in d&st?

oh and yeah, it was gruelling... lemme know when you can do one.

LOL.

The ease with which you get defensive about that speaks volumes.
