I'll freely admit that Valve have done nothing but release worse and worse stuff since 2007. In a pretty linearly increasing fashion. Or maybe exponential would be more fitting since things started off ok.

But I think this is different. Mainly because it's a singleplayer game. Their first since Ep2/Portal! And they were both fantastic.

Portal 2 on the other hand isn't the middle of anything .

Edit: And yes they screwed up Half Life. That's lumped in with my 'worse since 2007' comment.

It has 2 complete seperate campaigns in it (singleplayer, co-op) that are each over twice as long as Portal 1. It also has new characters and a complete mystery of a story I can't wait to get into.

Plus Valve's combined knowledge of creating great singleplayer games. I'd say it's worth it, especially to play it before all the 'cool stuff' is widely known and the game is ruined.

Yes I'm quite excited.

Twice as long is still short, but, as always, co-op intrigues me.

Will wait for a sale, I think.

Or just wait til they give it away for free.

Regardless of valves money hording, those are YOUR opinions of valve's games. Yoda happens to like some of their games. That is his opinion. There is no need for you to bash someone else's opinions on a video game forum. Be those opinions be on a particular video game or the clothes someone likes to wear.

Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal were all released to critical acclaim, they've all sold very well, and they all have large, active communities around them. Saying that Valve haven't "done anything worth a single clap in about 4 years" probably does have more to do with you than with the developer and the general consensus.

I'm with Uzi on this one, I reckon all of those games were pretty poor. I mean Portal was fun, but the whole thing was beatable in under an hour, that hardly constitutes a game. It's more like buying a demo. Although it's probably a good thing it didn't go on any longer, it'd get pretty fucking tedious playing 20 hours of it.

as i've expressed, i think the last genuinely good fps game in terms of 'pc gaming' criteria was vanilla tf2. that game had a winning combo and was genuinely well made. nothing since then has really had the same quality, balance and lifespan. big titles like bad company 2 have come out but proven themselves to not be in the same league when it comes to 'proper' pc gaming (i use the quotation marks purposefully, there). in my "glorious opinion"? again... it has nothing to do with me, personally. these are obviously the concensual opinions of the pc gaming world... because if people disagreed with me, they'd be playing them. if bc2 and l4d2 and games like this were objectively good and if it was all just a case of my bad prejudice... why aren't there huge competitive communities for them? leagues? clan-scenes? now i know all of these things technically do 'exist' for all games - but on the scale of bf2? css? tf2? nowhere near. that's the difference between an 'entertaining' game and a 'good' game, to me at least. it has nothing to do with me having a big personal ho-ho about it.

leagues - numbers of and popularity of... and in turn the number of LAN's, competitions (open and closed), sponsor interest, prize money etc. that's an instantly quantifiable measurement for a 'successful' and 'serious' pc gaming fps. sure people will retort about that 'side' of pc gaming being geeky, no-life, sad, no-fun etc.etc. but really it's the only pure distinction that pc gaming and its enthusiasts have over consoles-- dismiss that aspect of pc gaming and you're essentially making an argument that you like average games for a platform that may as well be an expensive and bulky console or living-room entertainment system.
