I think I have this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_splints
The symptoms are 100% match.

Training in the army has really fucked up my leg recently. Can hardly even sleep, not to talk about running or walking stairs. Jumping is out of picture as it hurts way too much.

The worst is running on asfalt etc. Army hardly gives me time to heal as it does take a really long time. They just try to keep me in the training and not think about my leg. It just keeps getting worse and worse.
Couple days ago they finally x-rayed my leg and I have been eating painkillers for weeks just to sleep and be in the training.

Next two weeks are the physically hardest weeks in my armed service. 30km full gear march etc.

So does anyone else suffer from this and any tips on how to treat it? The base doctors just give me painkillers and those hardly help. At least for longer than couple hours....

getting really annoing as I have 47 days left in the army and if my leg goes even worse from this, it will hurt for months after the day I get back to normal life.

wrap your calves with ace bandages. stretch your calves regularly. that's the only thing that worked for me.

Not really that knowledgable on Finland's Army and the medical and leave system, but they're not going to heal if you keep stressing them. You need rest. I'm not sure if you have any vacation or anything, but tis would be the time to take it.

That used to happen to me during track season. I found that Advil seemed to work well enough that I could run during the meets, but even jogging during warmups before practice was pretty bad. Still, I don't remember pain being so intense that I was unable to sleep. However, it's always been said not to self-diagnose, so I'd advise you to get a formal diagnosis from one of your doctors if you haven't already.

Yup. Surely the Finnish Army have some common sense when it comes to injuries? You shouldn't be doing anything on it.

I have/have had shin splints and the only way you get rid of them is by stretching more and drinking milk/taking calcium supplements.

I've often heard that flat feet can exacerbate this problem... hence why the army don't take people with flat feet. I have flat feet and often experience shin splints when I'm walking uphill. It's strange, I often get it when walking but rarely when running.

Concentrate more on rolling your foot as you walk, march, or run.  When running in a slow formation, there is a very strong tendancy to 'slap' your foot on the ground (have the toes, ball, and heel hitting at the same time). This is one of the leading causes of shin splints, and keeps them from healing.

If you already have them, you are stuck with them.  Ice them when you can and stretch well before and after your runs or marches.

Well... little update.

The leg got a lot worse in the last month in the army... actually hurt it real bad in a full gear march too.

Its now over two months since I got off army, but the leg still hurts although I don't do anything very physical. Even driving car will start hurting on my right leg.

I have been to doctor about this, they did x-ray and magnetic scan, but they didn't find anything (they did say it often doesn't even show on those so...)

Now in two weeks they do a somekind of test to figure out if there is pressure between the bone and muscles. (or something like that)

Will be epic painful operation...

I got shin splints about 10 years ago ( from trying to run hard out of shape on pavement ) and that sounds like what you have.  My problem all stemmed from 1 bad 5 mile run in shitty running shoes followed by 3 days of "attempting to run" but failing due to pain.  Extremely painful if you continue to run/walk a lot and takes months to heal fully.  As I recall it took at least 3-4 months of inactivity.  Light stretching and swimming or biking ftw (low impact).  the key is not to irritate the problem so it heals.  Ibuphrophen before bed to help relieve pain and swelling.

I am glad I never got them in the military and don't understand why they didn't give you a profile for light activity.

I had the same thing 10-11 years ago from Hurling training. Running up tarmac paths with a 15stone man on my back twice a week done it to me.

The only cure is to stop running. Rest and regular stretching. I found rubbing deep heat into my legs eased the pain somewhat got me through a match. Although it actually made it worse. I had less pain so pushed more and made it worse.
Doesn't sound like your going to get the chance to rest. Be mindful that you could fuck yourself up for life if you don't rest now. Even if it does mess up your Army training. You could pass your training but fuck your legs and spend your army time pushing paper.

You gotta change your running style. Try to imagine yourself as putting no pressure on the ground at all. Like running on cardboard across a lake.

The thing is I dind't run much at all for few months but the pain didn't go away... when I run I have tried taking the steps as light as I can. My left leg has no problems with running, its my right leg that is causing me major troubles.

I was just walking my dog, and ran a bit. Now I can feel the pressure in my right leg. Will start hurting more and more as time goes. Normal painkillers don't help.

Recommend you get a plump scandinavian bird to massage the hell out of you.
I have no idea if it will help with shin splints but it might cheer you up.

Went to see the doc today.... they sticked a needle&hollow plastic tube combination in my leg between bone and muscle to measure some pressure... needless to say it hurted like hell. And felt like my leg was overfilled balloon.... very annoying feeling of pressure.

Had to drive about 100km home from hospital and it was pretty crazy... every time I had to break it felt like my leg is being torn apart. Its now 13 hours since the hospital and leg is in epic pain. Painkillers = no use. Same as without them.

Do you use a cycle trainer and/or do leg works with free weights? I said try them first to develope leg muscles before running or carrying a heavy load.

That sounds like a hell of a lot more than just shin splints.
