Obama 'To Curb Lobbyists' Reach'

US President-elect Barack Obama will usher in new rules to restrict the influence of lobbyists on his administration, says a senior official. Transition chief John Podesta said Mr Obama would introduce "the strictest, and most far reaching ethics rules of any transition team in history". He promised the "most open and transparent" transition in history. Various interest groups have been circulating lists and offering recommendations on cabinet-level appointments to the Obama transition team.

Under the new measures, Mr Obama will not allow lobbyists who petition the federal government to do any such work while working with the transition, said Mr Podesta. The guidelines will also prevent anyone who has acted as a lobbyist over the last 12 months from working on any policy area in the transition in which they had been active. He added that anyone who works on the transition and then becomes a lobbyist will be barred from approaching the administration for 12 months in the area in which they worked.

A bit sketchy on the details but I'd like to see him try.

I wouldn't hold out much hope either. This is the honeymoon period I suppose... usually the time in which a nation's hopes are built up on empty promises only to be crushed by cruel reality over a 4 to 8 year period.

Well he isn't in the lobbyists pockets, which is a good thing. They may have still donated to his campaign, but it certainly wasn't as influential as it might have been for anyone else.

Whether the policy is extended past a year will be interesting.

Or maybe looking to save roughly 2 million jobs. And roughly $100 billion dollars.

Maybe.

If he's the next Chester A. Arthur in this respect, awesome. Frankly I'm skeptical that anyone can do it this day in age. Might not even be the best thing for the country to be that ethical this day in age.

That is assuming that the government would keep its share of the corporations. These are LOANS. LOANS get paid back. Once the LOAN is paid back, the government has no say in anything the entity that received the loan does.

Ford and GM will go bust just the same. They've been heading down the gurgler for a while now.

Looks like you've just identified one of the entering criteria for the loans.

The long term costs of bailing out GM and Ford would greatly outweigh any of the more immediate benefits.

Even though these are loans, they are no interest loans (so far as I've read), so this means that they are ultimately loans made at a loss for the American people.  Even if they did incur the appropriate amount of interest, they would still mark an unhealthy reliance on government handouts.

I always find it funny how some people are ok with bailing out big corporations but complain about welfare.  Regular welfare is relatively cheap when compared to corporate welfare (when looking at per capita amounts).  It doesn't cost much to keep someone alive.  It costs a shitload to get a failed company back on its feet, and half of the time, these bailouts don't even really work.

GM and Ford are simply nowhere near as savvy at management as Toyota, Honda, and BMW are.

How much would it cost the welfare system to pay those 2 million people their current salaries and benefits as well as contribute to the overall economy (taxes on revenues)?

The math simply doesn't work in your favor, Turq.

Loan out $75B now and keep those 2 million jobs (and associated immediate and long-term tax revenue) and taxes on corporate income...or keep that $75B and lose those 2 million jobs (and related long-term tax revenue) and $175B in corporate tax revenue.

It's a hell of a lot easier to replace the management than it is to replace (or absorb the loss of) the company as a whole.

"Well he isn't in the lobbyists pockets, ..."

Sez who ?  Is that a statement of absolute fact or is it mere altruistic supposition that he isn't just another fragment of lint ?

The only change Oreo will make, and it certainly won't be in the length of "reach", is that of whom may be reaching.

His transition team is being run by the biggest contributors...that doesn't sound too "curby", now does it?

"but but but but but...CHANGE!"

The only change are the faces that profess change,  certainly not the rhetoric of hope proliferated to the masses in vast quantities.  Some may even believe them ...

or not.
